Is it intended to be able to build 4 starbases at a star?

The ability to build 4 starbases is quite fun. I play as tec and you can make the 4 bases clumped together for overlapping coverage. Then upgrad them with both trade port nodes and some defensive and fighter hangers. You end up with something that is impossible to attack without torpedo cruisers and/or a super massive fleet of carriers. And the plus side is the money you earn is ungodly if you have a decent length trade route somewhere else. I had a 13 planet trade route and that one star alone was producing about 30 credits/s. Give them lots of HP with defensive upgrades and 14*4 fighter 56 fighters in that one gravity well.  It would take 28 carriers just to even the score.

I can't imagine what kind of trouble 4 Vasari roaming starbases could get into if in one star's gravity well.

Far as I can tell, it is. Probably to make up for the extra size of a star and not being able to put other tactical structures there as support.

Throw a couple of 20 squadron Advent bases in together and you can do some real damage to anything passing by.

Starbases need to be able to construct their own shield generators in neutral wells, they are easily taken down because they have no backup. I guess though as far as stars are concerned, a tec starbase should be able to use reblenish on the other starbases that are nearby.

I agree that it is useful for credit earnings, and fighter coverage, but ive found that the AI never hangs around a star, even if its garrisoned, they always jump to another planet. so its an extremely costly decision to build and upgrade 4 in one star! What is the total cost? 50000 Cr +god knows how much crystal

unless it's a multi-star game...then it would be reeeally helpful.

Yea had that one game and once u get those up there is no going through that star without taking massive damage. Also you wouldnt even think about taking it unless that other person has no fleet to back them up and you have some doom armada lol.

If you are TEC you should just build 4 suicide starbases.... with core overload ability. then you can take out enemy fleets with just one SB. with the second lvl of self destruct the starbase can take down all ships except caps.

Is it me or sucide starbases are kind of defeatist? I wish TEC had another tech for their bases. Going down to the last bullet is better than mass suicide. But thats just me.

I wish that the self destruct upgrade wasn't a slot using feature.

Depends on how you use it -- if you use it at 100% HP, that's ridiculous.  Using it at 25, or 10, or 1, when your defeat is clear and you've done what damage you can?

exactly. like that stereotypical 'give us ramming speed'. look at what happened to battlestar pegasus in season 3.

You're right it would be rediculous to use it at 100% hp. but it makes no difference. any big enough fleet can take a starbase down fast enough without losing any ships.

once I destroyed a fleet of over 50 HCs with the ability. there is no real counter to this ability other than only attacking with cap ships.

You mean torpedo ships, right?

Even cap ships are gonna get pretty badly hurt by it -- and if the caps take enough damage before you hit the button on the SB...

Capital ships get obliterated by it. It does 8000 damage. Unless they're at full mitigation when it goes off, they're toast.

But do you put points towards something positive like 14 squads or HOPE you get to blow up your starbase as one last fu to your enemy?

Skimp on the armor and attack upgrades, to lure the enemy into thinking they have an easy kill. then BOOM@!

Hahaha. Boy am I glad there isn't an AI personality entitled "GoldenShadow" -- sounds like a bitch to play against!
