My game won't run now

I downloaded the recent update through impulse, and now my game won't run. Here is the error I get after the game begins loading(bold & underlined text is the title of the window that gave me the information):

You probably have custom maps in your galaxy folder. Delete the ones in C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\galaxy which are not in the following list:

This is F'ing fantastic- I'm trying to play with a buddy (we play once a month) and now I'm trying it on my XP box and it's giving me the same damn error.

4 Gig ram, 4800X2 AMD Proc, 7900GTX

Thank You Blair.  I'll do that.

For those of us who like our custom maps, may I suggest moving them to another directory (folder) for now so that you'll still have them later if this is changed.

Is this permanent?

No, it's not.  I've confirmed that if you open them up in notepad and change some of the formatting to match the 1.14 official maps, you can get your old custom maps to work.  It's tedious to do by hand, however, so someone's going to have to make a conversion program.

Why are player records not updating after games??? I have played 4 games and none of them have counted toward my record. Many others say the same thing.

Great patch - completely broken my install.

Thought I'd re-install the game from scratch, but it always crashes out just the same, as soon as I hit small maps to med maps to large maps, to custom maps = crash.

I uninstalled the previous game, I deleted the folders that were left, so clean as I can get it, all to no avail.

Takes about 40 minutes to re-install, patch etc, so an evening lost. The previous version worked just fine, so how does one only patch to that version alone?

You need to delete the custom maps you have in your user data\galaxy folder. This directory is not affected by installing/uninstalling as its in the user account specific area as specified by Microsoft.

On Vista its something like:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Galaxy

See this is why i wait untill i update.

Oh and hears an idea for stardock, If theres going to be a nother update, make sure it works with mods of earlier versions like V1.05. I want those mods but i cant use them.

Im just going to stick with V1.13 until then.

Sorted now, thanks.

I read the sticky on the new patch, and noted where the custom maps are stored, not where I expect them to be really, teach me to assume and not read/research the forum better than I did. My mistake.

Though I have to ask why the patch didn't address this issue, would have prevented much pain and grief to many users had the patch informed the user to do this, or better still delete the files itself, rather than being left to discovery the hard way, and some user intervention there after. If the custom files are in a MS user account area and cannot be deleted thus, one has to ask why the files are stored there in the first place?

Guess there must be reasons beyond my understanding, but back up and running now. Once again Thanks.

Well, mods change things in the game files. A lot of patches change the way that those files are written. For example, in vanilla Sins when you put a weapon on a ship, it can always fire. In Entrenchment, there's a new line in the files that allows you to restrict when a weapon can fire (so you can require research to make the ship able to fire it, for example). If you try to plug a vanilla Sins mod into Entrenchment, it's going to crash because the mod doesn't have the correct file format.

This is true for pretty much any patch that changes game files. Mods don't work because the file format changes and they need to be updated. Between 1.05 and 1.1 the biggest change was abilities using resources. In 1.05, an ability was always using antimatter. 1.1 added the option to make them use resources and that meant the file format for abilities changed (adding a line for resourceType), and old mods can't work anymore :P

And mods arent the responsibility of the game developers.
If you make a mod, you are the one responsible for the compatibility. Says thanks that game developers create their games with the modders in mind.

naquiste custom maps AND map designer maps do work in 1.15+ and entrenchment, also there is a little utility to update older maps to 1.15+/entrenchment version 3

first you will want/need a either or both winrar and 7zip ot extract files then download and install galaxy forge from the sins download page

for sins 1.15/entrenchment 1.01 the correct location is the program files galaxy folder, and running the tiny utility called entrenchment galaxy manifest manager which is in the 1.18 and v2.0.0.0 of the sins map updater

for sins 1.16/entrenchment 1.02,  the galaxy forge maps NEED to be placed here for xp
C:\Documents and Settings\'user name'\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\GalaxyForge

or here for vista/windows 7
C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\GalaxyForge.

NOTE the first two folders after the 'user name' are hidden , so to see them you must first click on 'tools' then 'folder options', then 'view', then click on 'show hidden files& folders' then click ok, then you will be able to browse your want to the folder. I suggest when you find the folder that you create a shortcut to it on the desktop

also the galaxy forge maps only show up in the galaxy forge tab of map types

and if a map you want to play was released before 25th feb 2009 then you will also neet the sins map updater from here

Obviously you missed the part about me not wanting to go back to programming school to play a game that should be working fine out of the box. I mean do you hear yourself, download this, change that, find this hidden file, bake on 350 degrees for 2 minutes, don't expose to sunlight, risks may include blindness, sudden loss of hearing, kidney failure, blah blah blah blah blah. Why is it that I can't just download a simple update, play my game without having to go to update school everytime. That btw is my point. One update, no searching, no unzipping, no editting registry files, yada yada yada. Sorry my friend this game is taking way to much work to play any more, maybe Sins 2 will run better.

To date I have lost 15 games due to updates, fixxes, super fixxes, and even more super fixxes. ( did I spell fixxes right?) I'll make a fix to check that.
