HELP can't get game to work on Vista

Hi there I've been so pumped to try out this game but it just doesn't load i keep getting this message of opening up my games explorer and starting the load of the game there. But like with many vista users I am about to pull my hair out after trying quite awhile to get it to work.... So I am asking any computer savy people out there that could possibly help me out much thanks.

Of all the problems with vista that supposedly exist i have yet to run into much at all. Most seem to be user errors or because their just used to XP and think it works exactly the same.

First you need to be specific as to what is happening people who are good with computers dont read minds or work magic saying "it doesnt work" doesnt help at all.We dont all have extensive programming or computer engineering knowledge (well at least i dont at this point in time give me a couple years :P )

Anyways, first when does this happen? I mean exactly when like when you double click on icon to run or something. Second what are your system specs? What vista version do you have? make sure you have the appropriate system reqs. Third do you have Impulse? try getting impulse and running it from there. Fourth, try running it in administrator mode. You will need to right click the icon, select properties, click on the compatibility tab and then check run this as administrator box. And lastly make sure all your drivers are up to date your video card sound card etc should have the latest and most up to date cant tell you how many times this fixes problems.

What is the file name(s) it's saying it can't find? Exact error messages or screenshots would be appreciated :)

Alright so this is what i am getting every time it trys to install the game in.

The installation for Sins of a Solar Empire has failed: ``The system cannot find the path specified``. Please check your settings and try agian.

Also it tells me this.

Windows Vista users: Use the Games Explorer (under the start menue) to launch the game.

This was copied word for word and this message comes up in the ``Sins of a Solar Empire- InstallAware wizard``

Thanks for your help so far guys its been great.

Okay, a few things you could try. One is to run Windows Update and download and install all the updates. You can also search specifically for a Windows installer update because that's what you're having a problem with.

Second is to download Impulse from http://www.impulsedriven.com and register your serial number (you'll see a blue orb with the Stardock logo in the top left after you run Impulse, just click it and "Register a product"). This will let you download the latest game version right away and you won't need to worry about the installer. Impulse does its own thing.

One way or the other, you'll need to register it in Impulse to get the latest updates, so I'd recommend doing that. It would still be a good idea to make sure your Vista is completely up to date on updates so running Windows Update anyway isn't a bad idea. ;)

Vista does not like anything to write into the programs folder after the initial install and redirects all such requests to a different folder. Most games do not use enough "fuzzy logic" to follow this redirect and either crash or will not run at all. To remedy this uninstall the program compleatly and reinstall into it's own folder on the C: drive, this should fix the problem for SINS as well as most games developed before Vista.

Well i'm still SOL with it I'll keep tinkering but i'm not holding my breath... starting to lose hope.

I'm lost... Is the error occuring when you're attempting to INSTALL or after the game is already installed and you are trying to LOAD?

Major difference because if this is happening during Install it is the installer complaining. Which could mean your temp directory has improper settings configured OR you're copy is bad. I'd recommend downloading the game via Impulse if that is the case.

If it is happening during LOAD which shortcut are you trying to open the game with?

As mentioned earlier, give details. I can fix almost any technical problem, but giving half backed information doesn't help your cause any. Were it not for the other people trying to help you I would have skipped your thread altogether.

You may have to search through the registry to compleatly remove all trace's of SINS before reinstalling, I had that problem with my nephews laptop running VISTA and CIV
