Well then you must agree that it isn't "most" games that do this if you can't even name me one.
I'm sure it's happened to a few games out there, but it certainly is not common to most games and I don't see how you are considering this to be acceptable.
Let’s just compare this to a couple of games made by Blizzard, let’s say StarCraft and WarCraft games. Patches for both these games never made previous saved files invalid. They did make old replays invalid which was inconvenient, but saved files were still playable. Now let’s just compare the games, SC/WC matches lasted a half hour, maybe up to an hour. They were never that long, but if you did have to save you could. And now let’s just assume patches made old saved files invalid, well then you might lose about an hour of a game. Annoying but it would just be about an hour max.
Compare this to Sins of a Solar Empire, where a single match can last multiple hours, you are much more likely to have a saved file for this game and you a more likely to spend a lot of time on a single match. And a little patch (that doesn’t even offer major changes to the game) makes saved files invalid.
I think that’s absolutely ridiculous and needs to be changed. I mean I did not even see a notification, any warning that this would happen if I patched. And since most games do not render previous saved files invalid after patching this never even crossed my mind as I was downloading the update.
But on top of all that, there is no way to revert to the previous patch. No option within Impulse to select which patch to download. No stand alone file to patch the game. It’s already pretty ridiculous that I’d have to uninstall the game, so I could reinstall it and patch it to the patch I want… But I can’t even do that! Where is the user friendliness in that?
Look at the changes this patch brought… fixed a few bugs and crashes… That’s about it… And just that rendered my previous games incompatible? This was not a major patch. I think it’s pretty clear that I’m completely amazed and very disappointed by this. I was loving this game until it kicked me in the balls last night.
So I have a question. I play this game with a friend back home. Let's assume we were to start a big game one night, and since we’re both in different time zones (and with our jobs) we’re limited on how much time we can play together each day. So saving a game is necessary and would probably take us weeks to complete. So if I do this (which we did plan to do), I would never be able to patch this game until we completed our match? And what if one weekend we can’t play together but I’d like to play online with random people, I wouldn’t be able to cause they are more than likely patched to the latest version and I simply can’t update mine or I’ll lose the game I’ve been playing with my friend? That sounds reasonable to you guys here?
Either way, I apologize for ranting on everyone here. I realize there really isn’t much anyone can do about this and that most of you apparently think this is perfect reasonable. So I must be expecting too much. I would at the very least expect a way to revert back to the previous patch, all I want to do is finish my game. Is that too much to ask for?
