[QUESTION] Star + Planet Questions & Answers

Ask questions about star and planet modding and get answers.

I thought this thread might be a good idea, which can be used as a thread for star and planet related modding questions.

Hopefully it can grow into a consolidated knowledge base for players to get answers to questions that are bugging them.

I will lead it off and ask some questions to a few issues that are bugging me.

1.) Changing a planet's size. Let's say I want to make 3 versions of the Original Volcanic Planet in Sins. I want the standard size (default), next I want a 2x size, and finally a 10x size. What files need to be edited to increase the size of a planet.

2.) Changing a planet's gravity well size. This one goes with the above question. Let's say I got a planet now 2x the size of it's original, but I want to expand the gravity well also by 2x. What files need to be edited and where to do this?

3.) What is the difference between a "Weighted" and "Non-weighted" planet in the Galaxy Forge editor.

These are just a few examples of things I am trying to figure out on my own, however it would benefit us all if someone knows, that maybe they could explain it.

I want everyone not to be shy when asking questions here, The only stupid question/s is the one you do not ask.

1, this is done in the mesh files, i resized them with softimage there is a free version for modders aviable.

2, this is done in the planet entity files. there are 2 values one is called movement radius the second is called

hyperspaceradius or something like that.

3, the unweighted stuff is truly random and the weighted stuff is that some planets appear more often than other.

you can see the chance by opening the galaxyscenariodef with an editor.

by the way i also read your other thread:

it seems that you want to do similliar things like the mod i am working on:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/338406

you can download it and look through the files i edited maybe this gives you some hints.

TohKlidan,

Did you ever produce this mod for pre-ench?

As in will it work with 1.15?

Have either of you considered adding a Dyson sphere?

A dyson sphere hmm  , not till now.

Wasn't there a mod that already has one??

The problem is if you want it to be like in Star Trek Next Gen than you will see in Sins only a metal ball in space, which is in my opinon not spectacular.

If you want to do it like in the original definition than not only the star is included but also some planets. I think a way to get this effect is to make a new SkyboxBackdrop texture that looks like a dyson sphere from inside. but if you zoom out you will see the stars again.

Another idea is to make a halfopen shell around a sun that you can see whats inside. But if you want it to be colonizable the only way is making it as a planet.

By the way, what benefits should a dyson sphere in sins have?

@NeoNaka: you can download the vanilla version of my mod now!

Hmm I hadn't thought about what bonus it would have, I just thought it would be interesting to see what came of the idea.  Truely the best option for use in a game would most likely be the swarm varient where there isn't a sphere per se but a large array of panels.

Honestly the only reason I thought of it was Danman's addition of colonizable suns to Uzii's planets mod in 7DS

yeah creating a dyson swarm or ring makes sense.

i will try some designs in the particle forge.
