Using the Kol as your first Capital Ship

Hi all, been playing for a few weeks now, only as TEC at the moment, so I thought now would be a good time to ask some questions of you fellow sins players.

So far I have only been using the Marza as my first ship, as recommended by most. However it tends to get focused fired heavily in the mid game (when it is around lvl 4) and tends to die no matter how many hoshis you throw round it. Hence my interest in seeing what people think of the kol. It has a nice protective ability, along with a nice anti strike craft ability.

I see potential in using a kol with a good mix of lrms and flaks, in order to counter both lrms and carriers, as the kols flak burst seems to stack well with the Garda.

So please give me your opinions, the more justified the better

Kol would be slightly more resilient, but before lvl 6 the difference will be nothing to write home about.  At lvl 6 Kol becomes a beast to kill.

I always prefer the kol it has a better mix of offensive/defensive than the marza. Plus the kol has better coverage so it still deal damage to surrounding hostiles whilst focusing on a forward target which helps, especially in the early game

I usually get a Kol second to support my Marza, then use them as a team.  They're actually a great duo, with the Kol providing strike craft cover while the Marza just does its thing by being a beast against frigates.

It depends on the situation, but I will either pick the Marza or Kol first.  If I think I am going to get carrier spammed, then I get the Kol.  If anything else, I get the Marza.  BTW, as TEC you really should get a second/thrid cap by mid game.

I perfer Kol over Marza especially after I started to use the shield ability over the gauss cannon. This allowed for a much greater survivalbility against everything by a large amount. Put this with a Dunvo and you had a duo of epic scale. Add in the Marza as third and you have the TEC Holy Trinity.

im a dual capital rush fan.

 

my first 2 mins goes something like

upgrade home planet

find out what planet reserch i need if any and start (first 2-3 planets)

second cap ship

Akkan first, Kol second with a colonly ship

 

one heads in one direction the second in another, if it gets nasty fast i fall back and pair them up.

I use the Kol to clear a path for a colony ship till i can muster up enough money to buy a Colony Cap (Name alludes me now) then a marza third. Its hard to stop those three.

Marza first huh? I usually do Akkan first, because it can colonize planets. Match it up with a few cobalts and mop up nearby planets without needing a colony ship. What is the reasoning behind doing the Marza first? I usually do Akkan, then Kol then Marza later when I need to bomb enemy planets.

Marza offers your best damage output of any capital ship.  Unlike other colony capital ships, the Akkan offers no particular bonuses until you've added a second point to colonize, and isn't very useful in combat early game, either.  Kol is a defensive battleship, while Marza is basically a wall of guns, making them far better combat-wise.

Mothership and Evacuator offer absolutely awesome special abilities to back up their colonization.  Akkan's abilities shine late game, not early, whereas the Marza is strongest right away with that high damage output.
