X3 Terran Conflict, and Steam.

I am wondering if this game is worth paying 40$ US to play. I was wondering if anybody as played it could give me their impressions.

 

Moreover it seems the only place I can get this game is Steam. I certainly whish Impulse carried it. Does anybody know if I need to be connected to net  to play the game?

 

I'm not very familiar with Steam and trust me I would prefer Stardock but they do not carry it.

Steam is the only current carrier because technically, it has not been boxed for a US release yet (even on Amazon you get the UK version). Steam does have to be running to play, but there is a way to use it in offline mode (I never have, so I would not be able to tell you how).

That said.. do you have any experience with X3: Reunion? It's a bit hard to describe if you never played the X games!

Yes I have played Reunion for a few weeks now. It's a bit like Freelancer but a lot more sophistacated. It's just that the price seems a bit steep and I was wondering if the game was worth that much more.

 

And being obliged to be on the web means that if I take my laptop with me will cause the game not to work. That makes it a bit ackward.

Well, Terran Conflict mostly builds on Reunion. It has the same starts (to my knowledge) as Reunion, but it adds on the Terran race and has some much needed UI improvements over Reunion. So I guess the price is a bit steep, especially if you've just gotten Reunion. But, perhaps when it's actually released in the US, it will be lower. I think it's slated for release around April or so?

And as I said, there is an offline mode to Steam, I just don't know how exactly it works

I prefer Evochron, especially if you like Multiplayer.  That being said, I only just purchased X3: Terran Conflict two days ago.  I'm still trying to configure it correctly for my joystick, grumble.  The joystick configuration for that game leaves a lot to be desired...

I will have to look up Evochron,

 

As for the joystick I do not know if Reunion is different but my it is complicated playiong with one. With straffing and everything.

The boxed version will be released in U.S. on April 7, so hold off until then.

If you've already got Reunion...

 

It's always nice to support good developers and such, but a lot of the new stuff they added to TC is supposed to be what the Xtended mod team had already put into the original.  They hired the actual modders for the job.

 

So realistically, you can already get a lot of the addition from the mod, you'll need to do some research into performance and such to see what it's worth to you, the mod is fucking badass though.

 

If I didn't need twice the video card I have to run it smoothly, I'd have bought it just to pay them back for Xtended, but the mod alone taxes this system.

I loved Xtended. It really didn't slow my system down at all, if it did, was probably just a few frames per second. There are some scripts that didn't work well with Xtended.

A lot of people in the X Universe forum weren't very happy with TC. One of the harshest critics called it "XTended with extra bugs". TC did have a lot of bugs at release, due to Egosoft's inability to  hire decent testers.

The space docks were the biggest problems.  Massive resource requirements compared to the original ones that lacked moving parts and were a lot lower in poly counts.  Going through a busy system and flying past one of them would turn a 7800gs into a puddle of goo before it kept above 30fps.

 

Although, I was playing in windowed mode all the time, perhaps the performance is vastly better in full screen...
