Multiplanet Grav Wells

Help a newbie find out if this is possible

Hello. I'm a relative newcomer to Sins, and never had any interest in modding any games before. But since I have a very particular idea in mind that would make this game just about perfect for me (and probably only me) I wanted to figure out if this is possible. As this is the only thing I'm interested in doing, I thought I'd just ask you experienced guys flat out rather than dig into unfamiliar documentation only to then find out it's a waste of time.

So. What I'm interested in is in changing the dynamic of the maps. I'd like to have star gravwells be much bigger, and have several planets inside them. And yes, I know it's probably a horrible idea gameplay wise. But humor me; is this at all possible to do, or just hardcoded into being impossible (not just very hard. That I can deal with)?

Thank you

Sorry, it's impossible :(

To further Annatar's response: what you described has been tried many times by many people, all with effectively no success.

The closest thing anyone has accomplished has been to create moons within a planet's gravity well.  Depending on the modder's capability, these have even been made to orbit the planet, or at least move in some fashion.  While cool, these moons are not colonizable and only there for visual effect.

So yeah: sorry, man.  You're not the first to come up with it, and definately not the first to think it'd be really cool, but efforts have largely died out due to the futility of it.

bummer. What I wanted to do wasn't actually just to have that, but without that the whole thing kinda falls apart. I wanted to work towards some kind of Honor Harrington Universe mod. If you're not familiar with it, it's not worth explaining as a lot of it has to do with the way the ships move through space, and the way gravwells work. This pretty much kills the whole point of trying something like that. And so the way the Sins maps bear no resemblance to what anyone in the universe would call a solar system remains ma only hated feature in this otherwise perfect game. Oh well.

Thanks for the help and prompt response.

Hold the phone.

Would it be possible to make these moons into some kind of platform base.

It would be rather interesting if structures were placed on the MOON instead of in orbit.

Could you not just make a single mesh that was two smaller planets instead of one larger sphere?  As far as I know, the game really doesn't care much about what a mesh looks like, just it's physical dimensions.

The bounding box would be messed up on it I'm sure.  Planet bombing would look wrong as it would target the central "open space" between two smaller planetoids acting as one.

It wouldn't be a multiplanet object but just sitting there it should at least look like it.  At best, it's a fudge job but probably the best that could be done as Sins stands right now.

Yeah, that's what JSW_Ballz was saying. But there's no functionality to it, it's just there to look pretty :P Certainly there's no way of putting multiple functional planets in a star's grav well.

Maybe one of the 2 more expansions will add moons and suchlike.

Which would be awesome.

You could create a starbase designed and coded like a planet but similaraly to fleet graveyards you could have them auto spawn there and you could give ships the ability to capture them. Though you wold have to find away around the one sb per gravity well or you will have problems. ^_^
