Forum Update - March 27, 2009

Hello everyone!

An update has been pushed to the forums. There have only been 2 major updates to the forums:

1. You should now be able to update your avatar and personal image regardless of whether you are using Flash 9 or Flash 10. This should also work for any site that didn't work before for Flash 10, but that has not been fully tested yet.
2. Forum search is now working.  We are using Google as our search engine for the time being, but that should provide far better results than what we had before.

Please let me know if you notice any further issues or problems related to the above 2.

Thank you,

Bara

"Empire Senator Functions" and "Forum Stats" don't tell me much.  What exactly is the problem with these 2?

From the thread referenced in his reply, I suppose.  Here are some quotes with references...

- MV Empire Senators are "supposed" to have the ability to admit players in Moderated empires. Except no one knows how to do this. Admittedly, this seems more forum related.

The "forum stats" also has not updated for many months, probably for significantly more than a year.

I'd like to 2nd that request. It does seem that site activity has been continually updated and is correct in your User Profile (3859 replies) but that hasn't been reflected in the MV Forum Stats (2838 replies) since the major forum upgrade. There were supposed to be some kind of equivilent stats kept on Impulsedriven but that has really not seemed to work out in any kind of useful manner.

I think these are what he's refering to.

Thank you.  I guess I was being lazy when I didn't read through that topic :p

Can someone confirm or correct my impression that the on-site custom Google search actually excludes Off-Topic threads? (I'd be typing about this from Elemental if we had a Forum Issues topic over there. Hint-hint.)

I was hunting for the phrase "True Name" and decided to try Bara's fix. I got no results, but I had a strong inkling that I'd seen the phrase. I tried an external search with the site:forums.elementalgame.com parameter, and lo and behold, I found an Off-Topic thread that included "True Name."

I really don't want this to be just another mistaken observation on my part.

I don't exclude anything from the search.  It searches the whole site, including off topic.  In fact, if you can find it in the regular google search, you should be able to find it in our search as well.  Although I'm not sure as to what changes Google may make when using their search from within this site.

Well, now I'm thinking what I saw was a search burp because some later searches over at Elemental showed a bunch of clutter from off-topic threads.

Is there any chance we'll ever be able to search just the topics we want to read (an 'Advanced' local search)? Ever since the cross-site merger thingy got so big, it has been much harder to use the site: search limiter to help searches because the domain names don't mean quite what they used to.

Superbly effective workaround process of the Search Function - finally ours to use again!

I can only guess, busy devs have gained some well deserved slack from a thoroughly ready & solid beta compiled version of Elemental.

Unfortunately not, based on the tools available to me from Google.  However, I have started discussions with our database guy in possibly bringing back direct database search, so that we don't have to go through Google.  But don't expect it anytime soon, this is probably months off as it requires new servers to handle the load, some code updates, and likely other changes.
