Custom Capital Ship Name List

I've tried to search the forum because I KNOW the answers have to be in here, but...

1.) Where and how do you modify the namelist that the game takes the randomized capuital ship names from?

 

2.) If you change this list to add your own names but nothing else, can you play with another player or not because you modified the files?

Edit: I found it in the string file, search for "IDS_CAPITALSHIPNAME_TECH00" and there's the list for the TEC names.

 

This is assuming you have a "text" version of the string file, that's another thing I'm not too clear on how people make.

The English.str file is automatically in text format and does not get converted in to Binary.

The file you're looking for (either English.str or German.str) can be found here:

C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\String

or

C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Entrenchment\String

Depending on if you have entrenchment or not, as Dashotosho pointed out you can find each entry at IDS_CAPITALSHIPNAME_ inside the file, if you have trouble opening the file use notepad, or wordpad.

So I'm guessing that changing it won't allow you to play with other players without them having the modified name list?

 

Just wanted to save myself some time by having the game select from a database of names that I want.

Flying you are right, however, if you replace the string file in the program file and sent the same one to your friend, maybe you could

Can't you change the names of the capital ships yourself, I know you can do it with planets, and if memory serves you can do it to capital ships to

You can change the existing names, but you can't add new names, or a new l;ist for a new race.

I would say you can probably change your existing ship names and still play multiplayer. Of course the other player would see the original names (e.g. it would be IDS_XXX_TECHnn String Name that would be passed to other players, not the actual string Value).

I have to say I'm surprised that with such an active community, no one has yet created a mod to simply create a list of names that would be applied automatically to ships as they are built. (Or have they?  I've been looking, and haven't bumped into one).  Admittedly, it isn't a HUGE hassle renaming each ship, but it would make things a bit more enjoyable, don't you agree?

  Perhaps a batch file that re-names the list when you run the game? Interesting, i'm just wondering how to have it run, or perhaps, it would be simpler to have two, one orginal, one "custom" which we run, then load the game.

It is a little bit of a step, but not much, and would provide a way to have a custom race, that even if based on one of the other races, still has a "custom" list.

Someone needs to let Annatar know, he has been looking for this too, for a while.

I'd be more interested in renaming the plannets to have more meaningful names.  This way I could receive messages that Pluto is being bombardes instead of Riverska, which I always mix up with Ravirska.

 

The current plannet names are just to unfamiliar.
