Will no longer run in Vista

I just got my PC back from the exwife and I am in the process of freshly formatting and installing vista and everything else.

So my problem is thus...

I did a fresh install of Sins 1.05 via stardock and everything was fine. It played, worked, looked pretty. Everything I always wanted. :p

I went to patch via impulse to the latest version 1.16.051 and the game just wont launch at all. I open the Launcher and click run, I get a busy icon for 4-5 seconds then nothing. No process is opening in the Task Manager. I even tried to lauch directly from the exe and the same thing happened.

Reboot and I get the same.

Now it doesnt play, work or look pretty, and I am sad. :(

Anyone able to help me out?

I have done a full reinstall via impulse and the same thing.

The game just wont start. I wanted to go back and try to play a bit before I purchased the expansion, but this is depressing.

Anyone else have this kind of problem?

I thought that was what this technical forum was for....

What would booting into safe mode acomplish? Maybe if there was other junk in the way, but its a fresh format.

This is a fresh install in Vista SP1 with updated drives and nothing else on it. I just got this PC back last night and the first thing I did was format it.

Sins works fine if I install and patch to 1.05. Sins will not even start a process in the Task Manager if I install and patch to 1.16.051

So again I ask if anyone else has had these kind of problems with Sins.

OK.....

Install number 2 above was a fresh install via Impulse only to 1.16.051 and the game wouldnt budge.

On to install number 3....

Installed via stardock again to 1.05.028 and the game works.

Patched to 1.16. and the game does not run. There is no hanging process in task manager doing nothing, it just sits there.

I have tried launching from the exe and launcher in both normal and admin modes and nothing I do has any effect.

I REALLY wanted to give the expansion a try, but it looks like if I want to play sins at all, I will have to play on 1.05.028.

So here I go, off to uninstall and redownload/reinstall another 1gb worth of bandwidth.

This is very similar to a problem I had. First I suggest that you do a complete uninstall, then reboot your PC.

When your PC finishes rebooting, you should remove any left over Ironclad folder/files.

If you go to the Administrative/or Main access folder, then AppData, then Local. You shold see Ironclad Games folder.

Delete It. I believe that some of the files may have become corrupt and or incompatible with the new Sins version.

When I took these steps, rebooted again and reinstalled, Sins worked just fine for me. I hope this works for you.

I will try this tomorrow, thanks for the advice.

I uninstalled, rebooted and deleted the files left in AppData then rebooted again.

I then installed via impulse to 1.16 and the same problem.

The game wont start and still not even in inkling of a task/process in task manager.

I am at a loss.

I can tell you one thing, I am really tired of downloading the game over and over again.

Arcath,

I had a similar problem way back in the beta days with Sins. The way I resolved this issue was by going the C:/Program Files/Stardock Games/Sins of a Solar Empire folder and right clicking on the 'Sins of a Solar Empire.exe' file then clicked on 'properties', from there I clicked on the 'Compatibilty' tab and checked the 'Run this program as administrator' box. This fixed the issue with Sins not wanting to boot up for me. I also did the same with Impulse and any Video BETA drivers I was using.

I haven't had an issue since with Sins not wanting to load/run.

I am running: Vista Home Premium

Hope this helps and good luck with your issue!

Hey Christinamasilek, if you actually comprehended anything I posted at all in the entire thread, then you might have caught on to the fact that the first thing I did to my PC was format, reinstall Vista SP1, and then installed Sins.

I bit my tongue the first time you replied, but maybe you should go back and read my post again, instead of posting your very helpful but not even sentence length replies. Also, spell check is a real nice thing to use as well when posting replies to topics.

Anywho....

I have received one email from tech support who suggested I turn off my firewall/virus protection. I already did this and no dice.

PoorManDSO, thanks for the response. I have already tried running in administrator mode. No dice.

Again, I can run 1.05 Sins just fine. I just can't upgrade to 1.16.

I'm not sure if you have it sorted yet arcath but I remember when I installed Sins the first time the UAC had to be turned off as important files would not install if it was on.  I would install all the patches with it still off as well just in case.

Anyway I hope that helps - vista is a pain there is no doubt.

Chazzie,

Turning off UAC had no effect. Installed via Impulse in admin to 1.16 with UAC off.

Same thing, no start or process in task manager. Just hangs and does nothing.

If I knew the expansion worked I would purchase it in a heartbeat, but since I cant even get the game to run I dont see the point.

I mean I can play in 1.05, but I really wanted the updates.

::shrugs::

Is there a 1.16 standalone patch?

I found a 1.15 patch torrent and I patched to 1.15 and was not able to play on my PC either.

So I am at a complete loss.

arcath, not to sound crazy here but seeing how you have a fresh install, have you tried to disable un needed services? sometimes these service features cause all kinds of chaos. If none of that helps, what firewall are you running? I used to use Comodo but that gave me all kinds of fits with some games.

i really wish someone would come up with an PC OS strictly for gaming. That way manufacturers would have a consistant base to code with/from instead of having to fight registry issues, firewall incompatibilites, etc etc. course i guess some people call that idea "consoles" lol.
