I had an interesting run-in with an AI Orkulus and got owned due to the Debris Vortex. I went into a system with a fleet and wanted to take down the Orkulus pretty quickly. I had some of the Torpedo Cruisers along, but not en masse. I did have quite a few Kodiaks (amongst others) along for the ride as well.

Because the starbase spreads damage over a lot of units (as opposed to focus-firing on each one) I still had quite a few ships in my fleet left as the very-upgraded Orkulus neared its death. I was watching its hull hitpoints, and I thought I was in good shape considering I saw it drop down below 100 hull HP. Then the ridiculous happened: the spread of damage from the Orkulus started to pop my ships. In very short order, I went from imminent victory to completely hosed.

The damn thing wiped the fleet and had several thousand Hull points restored to it all in a very short span. It was rather depressing, really. Oh well, I just brought in a bigger fleet the next time. Live and learn.

It will be eating them because they are as good as dead if they are in it's range.
