Capital ship leveling question

Do they gain expierence more slowly with other caps nearby? As in, would a capital gain more exp by taking out the nutural planets guards by itself rather then with 5 other capitals?

yes all cap ships gain experience from the death of a ship not on their side which is split evenly amoungst the group

In other words if 6 caps are in a gravwell and an enemy LF (Exp 30) dies each cap gets 5 exp pts

Yeah a really stupid (hopefully unintended) feature.

It is intended. I remember the devs said it was ages ago

Here is something I noticed: I had some level 10 caps and lower-level cap fighting in the same gravwell. 10ers still got their share of XPs, the lower level cap upgrading only very slowly. Can someone confirm this? Is that intendet as well?

I think it's intended.  At the stage of the game where you have a L10 ship followed by lower level capital ships, it'd be safe to assume that you're dealing with fleets of substantial size.  If the XP wasn't being split, you could level up a new cap ship insanely fast. IMO it would diminish the value of keeping your cap ships alive long enough to get to level 10.

At the point where my caps get to level 10 (or sometimes even 6+), I usually relegate them to the reserve fleet.  My lower level fleet stays as my main fighting force, and I only bring the high level ships in when s**t hits the fan.  It allows me to level faster, but I can usually still recover if I bite off more than I can chew.

Good strategy.  I normally do the opposite, need to rethink my strategy...

From a logical standpoint, it actually makes sense. It is participating on the fight, therefore killing enemies, leaving less for the less-than-level-10 to kill. Therefore, they get less experience.
