Autocast and its many uses
Has anyone ever used autocast with huge weapons like the culture cannon or the novalith?
Has anyone ever used autocast with huge weapons like the culture cannon or the novalith?
no. I would want to keep them manual so that I can use a cannon on a planet and then jump in with my ships, instead of having it shoot randomly at various planets in vain.
Yes, when I'm too impatient with waiting for the stupid things to charge up. If there was an easy way to select your ready to fire superweapons it would be a different story, but against the CPU I often find myself putting it on autocast during dull moments. However, you may want to take it off for the culture cannons and Kosturas as they can give a combat boost or a quick re-enforcement route in addition to their main effect, which you might want to make sure you have avaliable in close games.
No. Things like that I tend to micro depending on my area of expansion since they're not going to do much good firing on some random schmuck who I have no immediate quarrel with.
Abilities on starbases, on the other hand, tend to get put on autocast if I have a second battle going on somewhere else that needs my attention more.
Micro? I keep seeing that word but I do not know what it means. Well I do know what it means, I do not know what you are refering too in game. ![]()
What about any of the other features in the game that do not automatically get autocast, like the scout frigates explore ability?
By micro I mean using them at a time chosen by me rather than just as soon as the antimatter reaches the required level. Say I was facing a Marza some frigates and some carriers, I wouldn't want my detonate antimatter or phase-out hull to autocast on the nearest carrier, I would want to keep them for when the Marza tries to use missile barrage, thus requiring a human element to time it correctly. Hence, micro.
Also, scout auto-explore is a given most of the time. Put it on when you first send them off and adjust their course for what you want if need be. They'll start off that way then inevitably go off and get themselves killed in a pirate base or something.
Goafan, you can put your superweapons in a numbered hotkey just like any other ships or buildings, and tab through to see which are ready.
Micro is the abbreviation. The term is micromanagement.
I don't usually build them in the first place.
I've used auto with the culture cannon. In a huge multi-star scenario where you have two dozen of them firing at once, you don't care where so long as they actually are firing. However, if I only have one or two I'd certain choose my targets carefully.
Usually I use auto-cast in huge fleet battles where I just don't have the capacity to manage my own units. Setting a mothership to autocast shield restore is a perfect example. There are just too many abilities, however, which the auto-cast AI royally messes up for any systematic use of the feature.
