Need help seting up lan between two computers

I am trying to conect two machines over a Linksys WRT54G -v6.0 router, i have tried intializing static IP's and opening ports 600-6112 to these IP's yet still neither machine can see nor connect directly via the ip adress in the multiplayer window?

Any suggestions or basics i may be missing would be appreciated.

If you cannot get around the Router issue, I believe you can just connect a Reversal/Crossover (Pins 2 and 3 reversed) RJ45 cable directly to both NICS
