upgrade windows 7

I bought my laptop in September 2008 with Vista.

When the new windows 7 comes out will there be a upgrade cd available or will I be obligated to buy a new OS?

IS that information even available yet?

I don't have a quotable source in front of me, but I do believe Vista machines will be able to just upgrade. XP is supposed to have to buy the full OS disc, I think.

Of course the problem with getting upgrade-only is that if you want to re-format the drive at some point you'd have to install Vista again and then upgrade, rather than installing Win7 from scratch.

Even if the upgrade is available, I always suggest getting the full OS disk.

 

1.  It's a good oportunity to clean up your machine (when going from Vista to 7)

2.  As Annatar hinted, it's nice to have the full disk for future needs

Not Windows 7... just Vista SP3 run through another Mojave Experiment: Convince hordes of people, who probably shouldn't be on networked computers, that Windows Vista is not Windows Vista...

 

Also: As far as I know Microsoft allows an upgrade disk to install a fresh copy, it will just request the media of a previous version to ensure that the upgrade is valid. Maybe they changed this with Vista SP3... but if they did, it's just another reason to question why you'd want Windows 7 to begin with, no?

It's pretty sure you are going to have to pay for the upgrade (not the full license cost).

You will probably be oliged to buy a new disc. However you can download and use the Release Client of windows 7 now if you like, simply download it, burn it and install it. It will stay active til late spring 2010 or something:

Windows 7 supremely destroys the total and utter crap that is Vista.  Try it out, my performance on my PC has increased about 30% across the board, and is now very stable.
