Forum Update - June 2, 2009

Hello everyone!

I just pushed an update to the forums with some heavy performance improvements done to the backend by our database engineer.  A lot of things were changed, so I don't expect this update to be perfect.  Please take a look around, and if you notice any problems or any areas that could use another performance boost, let me know here!

There were also other, minor changes made to the design and back-end structure of the forums.  Most of these are miniscule, so I won't bother to list them, but anything that seems off or wrong is definitely a bug, so be sure to let me know here or via PM!

More coming soon...
End of quote

Strangely, on SeaMonkey (or FF3 or IE8) everything is as smooth as it ever was or still is except for the Replies counter of threads as shown on GC2 main Forum start page.

So - less coming soon please! B)

Btw, would you have a solution or a suggestion for the I-Mod-Productions.com (++) hosting paths flaw of late?

Contact Sven or Stefan, cuz even after extensive verifications with my ISP or LAN configuration, some server(s) are "blocking" some of us.

EDIT; (Lucky me -- the 101th reply has just proven that the page switch "error" has been fixed - too... Thanks!)

How are things looking now, as far as replies and post counts are concerned?

Quoting Denryu, reply 21
I have seen a lot of threads that appear to be posting to, because they keep showing as having unread topics (and jumping up the list of topics) but I show zero replies. Also depnding on the thread I post to, sometimes it goes in and sometimes it doesn't - even posts I submitted yesterday are not in the threads.

Just wondering will the rollback delete posts back to the rollback, or will the data be maintained and just the code rolling back?
End of Denryu's quote

The data will not be affected, only the code will be rolled back.

Alright guys, I'm looking into the issues now.  If I don't have the majority of the issues fixed within the next couple of hours I'll rollback.  And yes, we did do quite a bit of testing, but apparently we didn't catch everything.  Sorry about that.  More coming soon.

Thanks Bara :) As Wintersong said, crap happens, don't worry about it.

Seems to be working much, much better - dare I say, working the way it should be!

Zyx, I see that thread in My Replies with a count of 30, which is accurate :o

Nope... this https://forums.galciv2.com/354474 still shows 4 replies and it has more & less depending on "when" the refresh occurs__ed.
End of Zyxpsilon's quote

Sorry, some posts may require a reply before the count is updated.  I replied and it updated, then deleted the reply.

I at least see the page #'s now.

Just not seeing the >'s in the my replies to take me to the last position in the post.  but its getting there.

I cant imagine how much work all this is, so keep up the good work, and hang in there!

Bara, yours is numbered 106 (here, btw), thus the count is "differently" handled by site(s) or doesn't refresh where & when posts are registered within the DB function.

Do a hard refresh (Ctrl + F5) and they will appear :)

Not sure I understand, it says 109 at the top of the page, which is accurate.

In FF3, clicking on the 'go to last read reply' arrow of a post when viewing the 'My Replies' list takes you to the top of the page containing the last read reply, not to the reply itself.

Top of page post count seems to be refreshing correctly now.

Yep, the *current* tag of that specific reply which i just quoted above has the accurate "number"... but if you look at the...

(yours is listed as #9 (instead of 109!) and also gets the proper id=2240120)

Then, the presumed tags (possibly by the parser) differ which might explain why the refresh(ed) DB count couldn't or can't match some referencing process between different site(s) be it pages or recorded reply slots.

I just tried it and it takes me to the proper reply without a problem.  Can you try hard refreshing (Ctrl + F5) on that page to see if it makes a difference?

Where do you see my reply as being #9?

On the quote box. Basically it uses the reply # on the current page, rather than the overall thread. 25 replies per page x 4 pages = 100 replies, reply #9 on page 5.

I see the problem now.  Was it like this before yesterday's update or after?

Bara

I'm pretty sure it existed before the update as well. I don't really notice it, but I remember someone brought it up in a thread.

Man....the forums seem worse now than ever before. I "thought" I tried posting 3 times before but then nothing ever showed up so I just gave up.....and now here they all are..... XD

Those problems should be fixed now.  You shouldn't see them anymore :)

OK....that post actually showed up after hitting Post Reply.

The replies and everything work fine now. Bara fixed it up pretty quickly this morning.

That now seems to be working properly again.

Thanks for all the hard work, Bara.

Forum seems to be working well enough to leave the update as is, and continue fixing bugs from now on. Sounds paradoxal, but I mean no software rollback is necessary as far as I am concerned.

Yes, I won't be doing a rollback, all of the major issues are fixed.  We'll still be working on performance and the like, but only if a big enough difference is noticed with this update as far as speed and server load.

Not only is the number of replies different but the way each one lines up beneath the previous one is way off. They're running at an angle top left to bottom right.and crowding each other. It's hard to tell what belongs to who. Refreshing the page works until after you go to the next then you have to do it all over again. Oh...BK's 'puter runs ie6.
