converting reference data to text format?

I'm having trouble accessing the reference data included with forge tools. Everywhere I read it says the files included are in text form but when I open them they are clearly still in binary. Combined with the fact that the convert tools don't seem to do anything, how am I suppose to access and modify these files?

Any help on how to convert/edit these files would be greatly appreciated.

Well it does seem strange that your reference data within forge tools is in binary, mines not. Any way to convert it I recommend down loading one of the convert data GUI's that have been made available by some of the more computer savvy people in the community. Eg. "DK SoaSE mod tool","Sin editor" or "Harpo99999" lately has also released a utility and is working on other helpful tools also. Just downloand one of these and extract it into the folder you want to convert eg. in your case forge tools folder. On the setup allocate the covertdata file for sins vanilla and Entrenchment into the tool, then activate it and choose the file or directory you wish to convert with the little [...] buttons on the right hand side (for DK mod tool anyway) and pres convert. NOTE: the reference data in forge tools should be alright to convert as a directory, but the "GameInfo" folders in entrenchment and vanilla have files in them that won't convert, so you will need to convert the files 1 by 1 in these directories.
