Sins and Windows 7 RC 64bit problem

Sins and Windows 7 RC 64bit problem

I recently reformatted my drive and installed windows 7 64bit on my gaming rig and since then the game crashes, not minidumping, once im roughly 45min to 1.5 hours into a match. My questions are: Is anyone else experiencing the same problems with win 7 and sins? If so and u happen to be running sins in compatability mode, which one is it? Im 100% positive its not my hardware malfunctioning nor drivers issues as well. My machine also is beyond powerful enough for it and ive been getting crashes with and w/o mods enabled.

This problem is really becoming annoying and would not prefer going back to vista 64bit. Any help, suggestions and answers will be appreciated.

I am experiencing the same C.T.D.'s as everyone else.  Sins crashed in Win 7 RC 64-bit, 6 months ago, and Win 7 Pro 64-bit presently, how is there not a solution yet?.  Can't go for more than 30 mins without crashing.  Crashes faster once loading a game that has progressed a bit.  System specs are i7 920, gtx 260's in sli, x58 mobo, intel 80gb ssd, wd caviar black 500gb, 6gb gskill @ 1600.  Any Suggestions?

justmenooneelse & canuckles, have you tried lowering the game settings? the reason for this question is sins IS a 32 bit game AND WILL minidump when it reaches 2GB ram usage, I personally use medium on all  details, and I have only had dumps relating to bugs in mod in the last year.

Same problem here. Game crashes from a new game within about an hour or two. If I load a saved game that had been in progress for awhile, it crashes within about 10-15 minutes every time. When it crashes, I get some error message on the desktop regarding the game.

Running win7 Premium 64bit.

Irritating as all hell as I just want to play the game...

Well, if its any help, i have been having this issue since the last patch. same set up as everyone else here near enough,

i emailed support, who, after about 8 emails to and from them, sent it through to the Dev's and i've heard nothing since.

TBH, for a game with as much support at this one, it supprises me that they seem unable to fix this issue.

i've done everything from changing graphics settings, reinstalling drivers, reinstalling the game, and so on, it still crashes. tbh it looks like a memory leak on win 7, the way it crashes :/ shouldnt be that hard to fix tbh

I've got the same issue. Used to enjoy my long Sins sessions on XP but now that I've "upgraded" I can't play for more than 30 minutes without having to do a hard reboot. HELP US IRONCLAD. YOU ARE OUR ONLY HOPE.

dark_ord & pcjedimaster, the settings that I use for sins/entrenchment/diplomacy on my computers are

1 windowed mode (for testing/development of mods)

2 texture quality for ships/structures/planets medium

3 ship/structure detail medium

4 bumpmap detail low

5 tradeship icons OFF

6 asteriods/elevators/dust clouds/planet rings/debris skyboxes/deepspace skyboxes OFF

7 antialiasing off

and I have had a 12 hour game on a 250 planet 6 player map with 5 ai. and I still had some slowdown after the 2 hour point, but I was spamming novaliths and scouts and the enemies were spending more on re-colonising their planets than they were collecting so I won by attrition.

:( I just tried to change those settings and it crashed before I even had a chance to turn cargo ship icons off. Last time I played I probably got about 30 mins in.

Yep, same issue here on windows 7 64bit, diplomacy crashes about 45 minutes in every time. Entrenchment and the original sins work fine though. Not a memory issue, i can turn it to the lowest settings and it still crashes at precisely the same time.. Surprised nobody has found a solution to this yet..

just one more thought, have you tried verifying your diplomacy installation in impulse?

Well, I had to go into the settings file to change stuff. I didn't even have a chance to change things before it would crash otherwise. But, once I had that stuff changed I was able to look through all the options and make sure they were like you had Harpo. I'll give it a shot tonight and see if she holds together.

pcjedimaster, these symptoms suggest that your ram might be becoming marginal. you could try slowing the ram settings in BIOS to see if it helps.

another idea to try is shut the computer down, then open the side/ram compartment and clip the ram out and then re-seat the ram to clean the ram to MB contacts

hope this helps

I'm having the same problems as others here trying to run with Windows 7. Use to crash after about an hour. Here is what I did and it seemed to work for me.

1) Update video card driver (I have an ATI HD 4850)

2) Change the sampling from 4 to 2.

3) Don't run in windowed mode.

4) Don't have anything else running when you start the game.

Ever since doing that, I haven't had any problems. I have the all the other graphics settings on highest detail.

What do you mean by marginal? Dying? I just had the same sort of crash happen in another game. Weird that it started in SoSE and was only in that game for so long.

it is not suprising, as sins puts the heaviest load on RAM then cpu.

I mean for marginal it is getting older, and it might be helped by removing and re-installing the ram to clean the contacts between the ram sticks & the motherboard. I have done this exact procedure many times to help computers continue while the users save up for a replacement machine.

I'm on a relatively new rig unfortunately. Is the mobo usually the problem or the RAM? I can probably still send these parts back to newegg. I will try pulling it out and re-installing it though, thanks for the suggestion.

Is there any update on this? I'm eager to get back to a long standing fight on SINS with my new rig, but its suffering more or less from all the problems listed. Anyone?

Same here, the bug makes this game unplayable...

same issue
game crashes to desktop with no minidump

keep having to rehost with saves,  first it takes about 20 min to occur,  but then we have to rehost every 5 min or so  its unplayable

tried everything from compatibility mode to lowering graphics to the absolute minimum
i even adjusted some Catalyst settings, so it would not force any settings

i recently tried Distant Stars mod,  same thing there

Win 7 64Bit
Intel i5 Quad Core
Ati Radeon HD 4870
Latest catalyst and Catlyst control center Drivers (10.7 i think it was)
4GB of RAM

hope theres a fix for this fast :/ i'd hate to reinstall XP on other (crap) pc just so i can play w/ friends
nvm will be running a virtual machine and runnig the game from there, i hope they figure whats causing this,  its alot of trouble just to play a game

Diplomacy seems to always crash around the 30,40 min gametimer

ive noticed that the crash barely happens (it does happen occasionally) on Entrenchment
ive finished an entrenchment game just now,  ive got 1 crash very late game but after a reload it never happened again.

i dont know if this is ram-related,   the game used to minidump when reaching 2 gb+ ram, but now it does nothing of the sort,  it just crashes to desktop,   no minidump file in the folder either.
also would not explain why entrenchment works more stable then diplomacy diplomacy shouldnt use that more ram then entrenchment does.. right?

there is is definatly a compatibility issue with win7 64 bit (not sure if vista suffers from the same problem)
ive recently reinstalled on a similar pc, running XP 32-Bit, no crashes at all.
same ram (4gb)
same CPU (i5)
different GPU (Ati Radeon HD 4850)

i really should reserve some time to figure out how to install a virtual machine, but still hoping theres going to be an easy / fast solution for this

a call to the dev's, please look into this.
i know i can figure out how to use virtual machines, but there are plenty who'd just stop playing altogether

sorry for... dual.. post>.>

out of frustration i went searching for other optiosn and found something about win7 and sins using up to much memory

to put it fast,
for me, the game crashed to desktop becuase it ran out of memory the limit being somewhere aroudn 1800MB

this basicly happens becuase sins is a 32-bit application and the limit on 64-bit OS's is bigger, which can cause problems
there is a tool that can increase the max memory useage of applications (including sins) to 4 GB, avoiding sins crashing when it nears the 2 GB limit

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=112556

i've tried this method myself yesterday, and played a game of sins diplomacy + distant stars mod with my friend, no crashes on my side
after about 45 min in the game, my friend crashed (:D),  i gave him the tool, reloaded the save and happily went on playing with no more crashes.

can safely say that this tool works
i advice anyone having the problem of windows 7 + sins crashing to desktop to give this tool a try (a howto is on te page,  just follow the "basic" method)

important note!!

you might need to have the tool unmodify the sins.exe back to its orignial state if there's a patch.
then modify it back again after patching is complete, if you dont the patch might think you have a different version
you can also just keep a backup of the old .exe and switch around during patches

it also seems this works for vista, xp, and even 32-bit users altough some extra steps are involved for XP (all mentioned on the page)

hope this helps everyone as much as it helped me

P.S.
Happy birthday me!!
