I was skimming through some of the older posts on the Sins forums, when I cam across a short one I had posted to twice. It was yet another of the "Who be chasing teh Vasari??" threads, and while this one was filled with the usual "Daleks!" or "Replicators!" or even my "Yuuzhan Vong!", a valid point was raised in it. Unfortunately, it was never addressed in the thread.
How would this mysterious, impossibly indomitable race be balanced with the other three?
It wouldn't make sense for an RTS like Sins to have an Uber power which is impervious to the others. It would completely skew gameplay. Online, no one would ever play as any of the original races. After all, who would want to be banging away with an Airsoft gun when your enemy is packing an AK.
This got me thinking.
It would be better if the mysterious enemy, provided it was ever actually included in an expansion, or dare we wish it, a full on sequel, wasn't a balanced race. It would be just as overwhelmingly powerful and indestructible and terrifying as it's made out to be. It just wouldn't be a playable race. Sure, this would irk some players, who would want a chance to kickass, but I'd say it's for the better. The race/species/technology/plague would be a AI run race, which would force all of the other players to band together to try and counter it. Lay aside their quarrels and differences in order to ensure their continued survival.
Another way to do this would be to create an additional civ, in which you control every other civilization, as if it were some sort of coalition or treaty. Many of the ships in the game complement other ships of other civs, and by wielding the combined might of the three civs, I'd say you could give the mysterious enemy a run for their money.
TEC, Advent, Vasari
TAV
Sounds pretty damn good.
