Fleets

i am just curious as to what people who play as TEC comprise their fleets of.  do they comprise of mostly LRM's or light frigates, lots of kodiaks or few, etc.

LRM, flak, and hoshikos typically make up an early game army.  Carriers are not uncommon, and in moderation light frigates have their purpose but are seldom seen in significant numbers after early colonization.  Surprisingly, scouts are often used as a combat unit in the early game, although they are somewhat situational.  Kodiaks are absolutely awesome, but the trick is phasing them into your army.

Cielos are good, but rarely seen (too high in the tech tree and overshadowed by the hoshiko anyways).  Krosovs are almost never seen.  Don't expect to see many Ogrovs unless you're making starbases, and often times you'll just see carriers laden with bombers instead.

Acutally, i have few of each ships more like 8 per, although

definitely Kodiaks, and Hoshikos. Sometimes LFs or LRMs (longest ranged unit), Will bring in small amounts of Cielos, they are useful, and carriers.

A hypothetical "perfect" fleet would be composed as follows...

1. Kol (level 8+)

2. Dunov (level 7+)

3. Marza (level 7+)

4. 40 Cobalts

5. 30 LRM's

6. 20 Percheron

7. 30 Kodiaks

8. 15 Flak

8. 12 Cielo's

9. 40 Hoshikos (more hoho's=more of your ships that stay alive)

Simply put:

Cobalts=Good front line attackers.  By using detonate AM, they can deal damage and disable abilities of support cruisers

LRM's=Decent LRF.  Good for taking out Skirmishers and Defense Vessels.

Flaks=Decent fighter/bomber support.

Kodiaks=Great for soaking up damage and dealing it.

Cielo's=Great for aiding in focus firing.

Hoshikos=The more you have, the more impossible it is for your enemy to kill your ships.

There is no "perfect" fleet. What your fleet should look like always depends on the enemy fleet/defenses.

LF countered by LRF

Flak countered by LF

LRF countered by Fighters

Fighters countered by Flak

Bombers countered by Fighters

Starbases countered by anti-structure ships or bombers (or a vasari SB)

Carriers countered by LF

Heavy cruisers countered by Bombers

Support cruisers countered by LF

LRF are countered by scout when the ratio is at least 1:2 (the scouts are still cheaper)

Now, from that list LFs seem to be a good choice, but the degree of the counters varies. While LFs deal respectable damage against the abovementioned ships the counter, they get devastaded by LRF. And by devastated I mean...annihilated. The same goes for fighters when they face flak. You need to experiment a bit on what's the best balance against certain fleet compositions. E.g. illums+flak are pretty hard to counter, because you won't get rid of the flak and the flak protect the illums from fighters. Best choice would be HCs (which "counter" pretty much every ship, i.e. deal good damage against it) but they get rendered useless by repulse.

Anyway, try&error and browsing through the stickies will help!

I was going with a fleet with good survivability and one that could take on pretty much any opposition.  The amounts are just general ideas...  If the enemy is spamming carriers, build flak and LF.  The point is, it is flexible enough that you could counter what is thrown at you.  After all...  Its pretty hard to punch through the regen of 40 hoho's and a Dunov...

Per fleet or total?

It was a general amount... And that would likely be for your primary fleet, unless you are playing 1v1 on a huge map...  Then you might have that many in each fleet...

I generally have one main heavy hitting battle fleet, comprised of 2-3 Kol battleships, 1-2 Dunov battlecruisers, a Sova carrier, an Akkan and a dreadnought, escorted by between 15-20 Kodiaks, a handful of carriers, 4-6 Cielos, a couple flak frigates, and lots and lots of LRM frigates, Around 20 at least. My other fleets are jsut a mishmash of starships that does come kind of close to respecting that ratio, but I do like to have a small force comprising a dreadnought, some carriers, a bunch of LRM frigates and a big pile of siege frigates as a dedicated planet-killing force. If I remember, and have the pop cap, I'll either throw in an Akkan (for colonizing) or keep a colony frigate within a jump or two from the front, but out of harm's way.
