Jafo, how do you like it? I read that review and it does sound like a nit pick.
Rnick....in real-life test/experience I can put my hand over the PSU exhausted air and it's cooler than I am. What that simply means is very little of the energy consumed by what some like to claim is a waste is actually being lost to heat.
It's quiet, well made, and has all the connectivity anyone is likely to need with modular wiring component looms....
twifightDG... The rating or capacity of a PSU is not a waste of resources. It doesn't magically dissipate unused/needed wattage into the ether. What IS a waste of resources is the ill-considered purchase of one particular component only to be discarded and replaced by yet another.
I conserve resources by ensuring my purchases will see a long life.... and even when replaced, as the P4/3 gig was... it's via 'hand-me-down'....my wife uses it now. The system is 5 years old or more....and the box is even older. Is it stupidly excessive to buy a Lian Li aluminium case without a PSU for the better part of $200 AUD [and then not be discarding/putting up with a PSU that did not suit you] and still be using the same box...and thus also its same cardboard packaging even....7 plus years later?
Oh yeah but, you say....you could have put in a smaller PSU. Yes, I did...5 years ago I put in a 600w ....and it's still working perfectly and I expect it to continue for another 5 years.
Now, if we're into vehicular analogy none of my cars has had a v8, 4.8 litre or otherwise. Most of my driving life [35 years] has been in 4 cylinder cars.... the biggest of which is [my currently owned] the SAAB 9000 Turbo....2.3 litres ....and guess what?...it harnesses the wasted exhaust energy to turbocharge the engine induction....making it more efficient than a naturally aspirated IC engine.... and even THAT was bought second-hand so it would not end up in landfill anytime soon. All of my cars have been second hand and thus not a direct inducement to manufacture more.
Architecture as a career teaches you all sorts of sensibilities relating to urban living and the future of our environment/society/life-style. It's why I live CLOSE to the city....drive on average less than 7k kms a year, own/ride a handful of bicycles, take public transport, AND buy 1000watt PSUs....
