Moons

It would be nice of SoaSE had moons around it's planets, no? I mean, to replace asteroids. You mine the moons instead of orbiting asteroids. :inlove:

Honestly, if 3 asteroids were that close to MY planet, I'd pee myself. 8C

It makes so much more sense to have moons... and colonizable asteroids have orbiting asteroids of course, but moons for Gas Giants, and normal planets! Anyone else agree? \o/

Mod the game and change the mesh.  People have done it before, so some mod is around the forums somewhere with this...

that's a great idea! wonderful in fact!

Ya It makes sense to me but condersidering the scale the asteroids apear to the planet they might as well be moons anyways<_<

First, Asteroids could be considered Moons. Look at the Moons of Mars and... Pluto i think it is (though Pluto has been de-registered as a planet recently, so its more like an asteroid with another....um...asteroid) Neptune and Uranus may have similarly misshapen moons, but dont quote me.

Relatively speaking, only a few planets have spherical moons, namely: Earth, Jupiter and Saturn, and for the latter two, not all of them are spherical.

Second, Distant Stars mod has 'Moons' whereby certain planets have been reduced greatly in size to appear like a moon... but asteroids in GW's remain the same.

However, the scale in Sins precludes the ability to have realistic moons. Our own moon is 384403 km away, center to center. Thats 30 times the diameter of Earth. Its a long way away, and most of the asteroids in the game would actually be more in the position of an orbiting satelite (artificial), except, without artificially modifying/stabilising its orbit, some Resource Asteroids in Sins would actually crash into their host planets. Still, Rule of Cool, if it looks good, its better than the truth.

its a good idea, though, maybe for a certain type of planet, to have a spherical, colonisable moon that can be mined and colonised/armed

have a look at some mods in the modding forum (if you are using Impulse, you cant get to the Sins forums) heres a link: https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/forum/443

there are all sorts of things that may catch your fancy.

Pluto has a very little known technical title...  It is a "Twin Dwarf Planet."  The reason for this is that Pluto itself is the size of a moon, but its moon (Charon) is more than half its size, so it orbits its moon to some degree.

Spherical moons (depending on your version of universal creation [theistic or big bangy {no real title for this}]) are planetoids that failed to gather enough mass to actually hold an atmosphere.  Charon is about the smallest a planetoid can get and stay a sphere...

No...  Satellites are at the top of the atmosphere but still well inside the magnetosphere.  The asteroids in the game are not.  If these were satellites today, they would get fried.

Like I said, just change the mesh...

yep...

yes indeed there are...

End of quote

what kind of satelites? as in asteroids etc or man-made satelites?

if its man-made, then it depends, certain satelites are in a higher orbit than others (namely military satelites)

though... natural asteroids wouldnt get fried? unless you mean heat and fire-wise, in which case yeah, thats what i was saying...

where's the love for Pluto as a planet man? Pluto was discovered AS a PLANET, so it should be registered as such.

Poor Pluto:'( .

its just too small.... so its a dwarf planet.... which just reminded me of Lord Of The Rings for some reason

Manmade.  Any satellite we now make is not made to withstand solar radiation outside of the magnetosphere.  A single solar flare could wipe them out.  Only deep space probes are made to withstand that.  Military satellites are in a higher orbit yes, but they still aren't all that far away...

Because if they called pluto a planet they would have to call the 300+ other dwarf planets planets.

Thank you all for replying! |-)

Rezonator is actually right... and yes, Uranus and Neptune have asteroid moons... and it would, after all, be smart to nudge a resource-rich asteroid into orbit for quick access.  -_-

But, Rule of Cool! Moons look cool! :D

Does anyone know how I can get/use this mesh? And would it mean that the planets have 3+ asteroid/colored moons now?  :S

Go into XSI and make a sphere..  If you feel ambitious, add craters.  Otherwise, just get a "map" of the moon and use that as a skin for it.  Then, just import it.
