Ship models

Ok, heres the idea. I've made a small mod for my own personal enjoyment that enhances the power of capital ships, trying to keep things balanced, but what I'd like to do now is add a dreadnaught type cap ship for each race.

Unfortunately im absolutely hopeless at 3d modelling and texturing

I was just wondering if anyone has any models I could add into my game as dreadnaughts for the 3 main races, something bigger than your standard cap ship, that I could add my own entity files to and modify them how I like. This will only be for me, I dont plan on redistributing the mod unless anyone requests it...

Any suggestions would be helpful, im an absolute novice at modding, all I do right now is change the entity files and tweak the numbers ^_^

As far as dreadnoughts go, the Marza is one...  All the planet bombers are...

 

Also, if you intend to add a titan like ship, I discourage doing so...  Titan ships are impossible to balance.  Their very nature causes this.  If you have one, you win.  If you don't, you lose.  Its that simple.  A single ship with the ability to take out a large fleet is not something to be thought of idly...  These ships tend to break games.  I myself have worked on a mod with such ships.  The balance didn't turn out well at all.  They are either worthless, or invaluable.  They either beat everything or lose to everything.  I don't see a problem with a slightly more powerful cap, but a titan ship is a no from me...

And there are plenty of mods around that would let you use their ships...

I wasn't thinking a titan as such, and when I referred to dreadnaughts i meant in the same vein of WWII dreadnaughts. Biggest and baddest, the kind of thing you wouldnt want to go toe to toe with.

Looking at the current cap ships they tend to be fairly similar in combat power once you take into account all the special abilities, what I want really is a ship that you see and think "oh crap" and scramble to get your best cap ships to defend against. Just something that could handle a couple of cap ships on its own plus a little more. As I say it would be purely for my own enjoyment, so balance is something i can tweak the way I like it.

I guess I dont really want a doomsday weapon, just an undisputed king of the battlefield.

I ask about any models people could recommend as im completely amateur at modding, so I wouldnt know where to start even if I did have a model I could use... :P

have you used google, though i cant say how successful it would be or if you'd even find anything you like but its worth a shot. i can understand personal enjoyment as i've modded my sins game to be more, lets say, difficult for the ai lol. maybe talk to some ppl doing a starwars mod or the like and see if they will give you a model for each race (or how ever you plan on doing it) and then if you think its too small just blow it up a bit.

I'd like to see something where the Earth Alliance Warlock destroyer replaces the stock Marza... but I'm a fan of the Warlock destroyer, and Babylon 5 by extension :D

WWII Dreadnaughts actuly had less armour than other batlleships, the advantage they had was that they could fire ther guns over a much greater range, the lighter armor also made them faster meaning they could flee before an enemy battleship could get within firing range of its guns.

Same here. And lately I can't seem to get this image of the Warlock in SINS out of my head. I have an idea how to go about making it work, but I can't model worth a damn. SO does anyone know where one might acquire a model somewhere? I just want to swap the Marza for the Warlock :P

Actually their is technically no such thing as a WWII (constructed) dreadnought. All dreadnoughts that fought in that war where built before the London naval treaty of 1920. Many were WWI veterans, and it is in that era that they were state of the art. They were outdated in almost every way by WWII "fast battleships" like the Iowa and Bismarck classes.

 

Also David your description sounds a lot like a battle cruiser, not a dreadnought, though the gun range was mostly descided on size and caliber of the gun and what year the gun was constructed (a WWI era 15 inch gun had less range than a 1940s build 15 inch gun).

Look up the WWII ship Bismark or Bizmark depending on which side of the globe you are on...

That german boat killed more than it did dent... try and find history on some of the battles it took place in... then how she finally sank to the cold dark bottom... try looking in wikipedia first

Well, if you haven't already, I'd probably just suggest looking around through the existing mods that have custom/new models in it and find one you like. (3d object converter is a nice little prog that can view the models for you, if you don't already have a model editing prog.)  I also wanted to do this myself at one point, but couldn't actually find any ships I liked at the time, so did go about making my own.  Although all I did in the end was import existing ship models and alter them (like cutting off pieces of ships and attaching them to another.)  Was actually rather fun to do.  I just need to eventually replace their crappy temp textures with real ones...

 

As for balancing dreadnaughts, I personally just averaged out all the stats from the race's capital ships, and then increased that value by.. I think it was only 25%.  I can't tell you just how balanced that really was in the end, I didn't play with'm for very long before the most recent patch came out, and the conglomeration mod (I throw mods - or parts thereof - I like together into one) I had them in had to be updated.  Was far too lazy at the time to do it.  I can tell you, though, that they did rip apart battlefields (mostly because of having two cap's worth of weaponry), but could still be taken down.  And starbases still chewed them up, albeit somewhat slowly.

orciencor, did you see my mod updater? if not then you could it you old version vas for ANY of the post entrenchment release sins OR entrenchment versions ie 1.15 or 1.16 or entrenchment 1.01,1.02 the mod updater in the modding utilities pack can update the mod to sins 1.17 or entrenchment 1.03(if it is for sins then it stays sins, if entrenchment then it stays entrenchment)
