Researching - any order or just point and click?

Noob question.

Being very new to the game I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to explain 'research' for me please.

I admit I have only played the game twice so far but get the impression that when researching the 'military' and 'civilian' via the console at the top middle of the screen it simply seems a routine of researching the tiles which are lit because you have (eg) 2 academys (etc).

I mean, is there any kind of order to what should be researched and when or is it just a case of... if its lit and you can research it, just research it.

I dont see any advantage to thinking about the research as you need to reseach in order anyway.

Hope I explained all that ok, its just at the moment the research seems to be just 'clicky' part of the game without any real thought needing to go into it.

Any thoughts would be great and feel free to explain why I am wrong - if indeed I am (which I suspect I will be seeing that there are some hardened knowledgable players of sins on here).

Cheers folks!

There's a lot of strategy involved in picking what to research, mainly depending on what you need. Research is expensive and takes a while, so you need to pick and choose what you research in the beginning.

Things like armor and weapon upgrades are worth less for a while than just building a new ship, for example, so you're better off researching that long range frigate hull first to get better ships than spending all the time and money on things that won't show their benefit in the immediate future.

You'll start seeing more of this when you start playing hard/unfair AI, and especially if you start multiplayer.
