Internet browser failure. Help please

I have Windows XP SP3 english. One day I turn on my pc and when I open my Explorer 7 I get an error message that it cannot connect.

My Setup is simple I have a cable modem hooked up on a router. My second pc hooked up by wire on this same router works great. XP SP3 french. The other PC does not work. I thought it might be the wires and all but no. I can connect to MSN on that pc but I cannot access any web page.

 

Somebody told me that Microsoft browser is not very reliable. So I installed Firefox and I get the same error message and cannot open a web page.  But I can chat using my MSN. So I can safely assume that my internet connection works. Anybody can tell me why I cannot open a web page using 2 different web browsers?

Did you reboot the comp and the router? (which I am guessing you have already tried) If it doesn't work, your best luck is to contact tech support, or even customer support from isp

I know the ISP is fine for a fact. Since the internet works on the otehr pc that is connected to the same system. Even my wireless laptop works and it's plug on the same router.

Assumptions on my part since MSN works:  Your DHCP, default gateway and possibly static IP are verified as OK.  Also assumed is that you didnt install himachi.

1.  Virus scan and spyware scan your system. 

 

2.  Try flushing your DNS cache (I doubt this will work)

3.  Try changing your DNS settings to opendns.

I honestly have no idea how well it would work if you are not US based.  (I'm assuming your either in France or Canada)

If that does work and it seems slow, then get the DNS server settings from your ISP (usually on their configuration page) and manually put those in.

 

4.  Winsock XP fix

Follow the instructions here:

5.  Possible bug with XP service pack 3 (i dontk now if you are running vista or XP)

6.  What virus software are you using?  I've heard of older versions of Norton screwing things up.  Google a norton removal utility to strip it out.

 

7.  let us know if you get it working and which one worked!  If you don't get it working then there is a few more things to try before reformatting.  (ie. posting your network settings, getting a hiJack this report etc.)

is the xp english box connected to the network?

i know its plugged in but does it have a valid ip address?

click Start | Run
enter CMD and press OK
enter IPCONFIG and press OK

this will give you your IP information.  do the same on the xp french box.  everything should be identical except for the IP address.

if the xp english box IP address starts with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then you have some kind of connection problem.

I compared my ipconfg with my french box and they are all the same except for my last three digits. The french box end with 100 and the english box ends with 103 which is my router connected I guess,

 

I have no viruses and no spy wares. I can't seem to find any reasons for this....

it sounds like a corrupted tcp/ip stack and the simplest  fix is to delete the network adapter in device manager, then re-boot and let the computer add the network adapter again, but it could be your antivirus OR a rootkit causeing this.

which antivirus program are you using and when was it last updated?

I am using ANTIVir and the last time it was updated was the day before all this started. I have not been able to go on the net since on  that pc.

 

So recap

 

Cable modem works.

Router  wire and wireless works

Tried changing cables does nothing for the english box.

MSN works on the english box.

Firefox does not work neither does explorer.
