Points to defend?

Hello all,

I have just started playing a larger game with a few stars, and a wormhole.  i would like to know if in these games if I am required to defend the stars, and nearbye wormholes.  Or if I have to defend all of the planets, its been getting very frustrating because it seems like they have been able to strike at any of my planet with impunity.

On multi-star maps with a single star for yourself (no enemy nearby) it's a huge advantage to defend those "choke points" such as stars and wormholes. Building one or two fully upgraded starbases, with large number of strike craft, extremely helps to fight off arriving enemies.

Nonetheless I made the experience that this is not sufficient at least vs hard and unfair AI because large enemy fleets tend to jump after arrival at your star directly to the next planet before your defense can finish all of them. So either add a mobile defense (fleet) to these choke points which is able to chase the enemy or build additional defense at the adjacent systems.

I would recoment the adjacent additional defense, but ading a mobile fleet to help out will also help.

Thank you, thats what I thought I am buying the expansion today, specifically to make this part of the game more reasonable. . .

P.S. Can you put mines anywhere or only in a planets gravity well?

What I mean is could you put some mines, in a stars gravity well, or the uncolonizeable asteroid fields?

What about starbases can they go anywhere?

It depends on the race you're using.  Advent and Vasari can put mines in any available gravity well (using their strike craft or mine laying frigate, respectively).  TEC can only use the constructor craft to build mines, so they're limited to making mines in the gravity wells of planets they own.

Pretty much.  1 star base per player per gravity well (stars are an exception - they allow 4 per...).  Also, I think Magnetic Clouds might screw up the starbase constructors, but I'm not 100% sure.

they do. starbase construction is an ability, and magnetic clouds prevent abilities from being used. also why there are no resource extractors there

Also why they are completely useless, and rather annoying. Something needs to be done to them, either remove them, or give them more of a tactical advantage. The whole ability prevention thing is dumb because no one will fight in one, theres nothing to defend there (unlike plasma storms which often have lots of extractors to defend), they are just a waste of space.
