[New Mod] Free Research.

This mod makes the fallowing changes to Entrenchment 1.03:

  • All research is completely free.
  • The catch is that research takes considerably longer.  Tier 1 techs take 3 minutes each to research, tier 8 techs take 10 minutes.  Eeach tiers research time increases by 1 minutes.  (These times are for fast research speed. Normal speed will be 2 times longer than fast research speed.)
  • Defense (starbase tab) research takes twice the time mentioned above.  Tier 1 being 6 minutes, tier 8 taking 20 minutes.
  • Advent Research stations cost 33% more.  This is due to Knowledge Aggregation which gives the Advent a 33% advantage in research time.  This tech becomes extreamly useful in this mod, so much so that it needed to be balanced by more expensive research stations.

In online play I expect the fallowing changes to Sins gameplay when using this mod:

  • More capital ships.  Free capital ship supply research will make the cost of additional capital ships less prohibitive.
  • Larger fleets early on.  Less spent on research means more spent on fleet.
  • No standoffs.  End game superweapons will eventually become available, it's only a matter of time.  They will still be expensive to build (but not to research), but should help end those long stalemates.
  • Full usage of the tech tress.  Currently the winningest strategy is to research only ship techs, but no armor or weapon upgrades.  I hope to change this trend with this mod.  Will you spend your time researching new ships, or armor upgrades?

For the most part, I expect gameplay and tactics to remain the same.  This mod should have a familiar feel to it.

TO INSTALL simply extract the file to your Entrenchment mod folder.  By default this is C:\Users\Buttons\AppData\Local\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Entrenchment v1.03 but it may be different on your system.

There is currently no supoprt for vanilla sins.  I will update the post when I have created the vanilla version.

Acutally it is a pretty good idea, since it is free, logically it should take a hell longer for the research to complete

I was inspired by the game Homeworld which is the only RTS I'm aware of to offer free research.  It goes a long way to put a natural time limit on the game because the game ending techs always arive after a certain amount of time.

 

In Homeworld the more stations you built the faster you could progress down the research tree, so the only cost was the initial cost.  I would like to implement such a system into Sins, but I'm not sure how to do it.  Is it possible to create a new resources?  You could create a "knowledge" resouce which was generated by the research stations and then you could "purchase" techs with this knowledge resource.

Also, would it be possible to change the current situation which causes each research tab to behave independently?  Currently there are 4 tabs and you can have 4 independent researches going on at the same time.  Is it possible to make it so only one research could occur at a time?

Oh, and an idea: do you think it would be possible to have the number of labs owned affect the speed of reseach? meaning if you have more labs than the particular tech you want requires, you can research it faster. This would also encourage lots of labs.

don't think it could be done....however...there is a work around...just like the advent, just increase the number of tiers...each tier with 1 level, which increase it but a certian amount, and give this ability to all of the race....

I like Mooster's idea - that way Advent doesn't have an even more insane advantage. They should get something to balance it out, though - maybe cheaper labs?

Great idea, I'm looking into this possibility.

 

One easy change would be to make crystal used only for research and metal and credits for ships and structers and other things.  This way crystal would be exclusively used on research and would ensure research continued throughout the game.
