Slowdown due to memory usage

I have never posted before but have responded plenty. The one thing that has been frustrating me has been the constant slowing down of the game. At first I thought it was me. I have a mid-range computer (2 gigs of ram, 8800 GTX video card, Dual-Core CPU, XP o/s) and I use mods that increase the graphics by quite a bit. This forced me to keep my maps small and only one or two more AIs. But after wandering the forums I have been noticing more and more people complaining of this issue as well. So I ran some test.

Now I shutdown my mods, dropped all graphics to a minimum, and play a small (14 planet, 1 star) map with one AI. After three hours of run time it began to slow down. I then watched the replay and monitored the time count. At 8x the clock was ticking down less then one second game time per second real time. This is a serious issue. I hope that the devs see this and strive to correct this issue. Perferably now but at least with the diplomacy add-on. If anyone else has this issue or recommendation please feel free to post. I will ignore any trolls.

you should chart/graph the lag issues that you are getting, then do the same with some other peoples problems.  That way you can see how bad it realy gets on average.

I was considering the yes thank for the suggestion. Sadly I can only use my own.

Hi,

I've got a massive slowdown problem, too. There's a simple way to rule out your guess that it's a memory problem: Reduce the graphics to minimum. You will notice that the game uses around 550MiB in that case, but still suffers from the extreme slowdowns!

Someone mentioned that trade ports would cause it. I think it's multiple issues, but the slowdown typically becomes much more dramatic after building a few of those super guns like deliverance engine.

The real problem of the game is (aside from the numerous unfixed bugs) that it only maxes out a single core while graphics card and the other cores are idle, even if the game is set to maximum graphics settings (it's using around 1.4 MiB in that case).

It's also not the computer enemies that slow things down. There's an easy test for this: Finish a medium-large map by destroying all your enemies. The slowdown won't go away, although there's no combats going nor any fleets moving (except trade drones).

For me, the slowdown is most bad while playing advent although they don't even have resource ships, only trade drones!

I do wonder wether fighters/bombers are also causing constant CPU load although they are not required to do anything when there's no hostile ship around. At least it felt like a slight relief from that slowdown after docking all ships on their planet's hangars. However, the game still was somewhere around 3 real time seconds for one game second afterwards.

I think that the main reason the whole game lagggs is the big @$$ number of ships. I know this because when i had SOASE, all I had to do is research the fleet supply 2 or 3 times, produce some ships to that limit and then it was lagging.

Try testing the lag (small or medium size map) by playing a game without the AI's & pirates and build only structures (logistic and tactical) and 2 or 3 caps just for colonizing and fighting the militia, then a game without AI's or pirates but only with extractors, trade-refinery ports and all the ships you can get and finally, a game without AI's and without pirates and let the game sits just like that so you can see if the game lags after some quality time or there is another thing that is causing the lag.

I think the PC specs don't play some significant role here (except in my case, I was running the game on minimal req). I've spotted posts where the OP mentions he/she has 2 gigs RAM, some have 4 gigs, 8 gigs, core 2 duos, quad cores, bla bla bla and in every case the game lags mid-late.

My bet is on the fleet supply though.

P.S. Bad English, sorry.

I've had the same problem, I just tested it and used a friend of mine to feed my resources for a quick game so that I just build a massive fleet as fast as I can. Once I saw a slow down and some graphical failures I minimized and checked my cpu and ram useage, it said that sins was useing OVER 1,390,000k and then abruptly crashed. I only had the 3rd lvl of fleet capcity and 2 cap ships and the fleet capacity wasn't even maxed out yet.

The game requires/recommends 2g ram, yet I was using over 10g ram on a small fleet. And by no means do I use high effects and rendering, and no mods at all. This pretty much makes the game unplayable for atm, since any moderate fleet will crash the game. I got the game pretty recently with collector's edition, and was just getting the hang of playing, and now *poof* no can no has big fleet.

sad times for all atm.

Hi,

we probably will be rid of this soon :) At least for the problem I experienced, they were able to reproduce it from the save games I provided. They also said that they already reorganized the handling, solving the problem!

I REALLY hope this is true. My friends and I really like the game but it becomes really frustrating to play with larger maps because of this slowdown issue. I am not sure if we will get Diplomacy if this issue is not fixed. We have some other friends that have been considering buying the game but are holding off because of this issue.

I've checked other sites if they had a solution or something to prevent it, no luck. I loved this game till I couldn't run it anymore, I'd like to get the new expac but untill I know its fixed I can't bring myself to get it.

I know this is still happening post 1.0.4 entrenchment I thought it might be the host who only has 2gig getting near his memory limit but it happens if i load a game on my own once I get past about 1hr I am down to a 30 frames/sec form 60+ and then 2 hrs in on a 5 player (4 unfair ai + Me) map i can be down to 8 - 10 frames and then you hit random slowdowns when zooming.

I have tried altering the graphics and this makes no difference neither does using it on a 64bit windows 7 as opposed to xp32bit.

any word on what is happening.

We tried it this weekend and the slowdown/pausing is still happening. However, it is less annoying now because it appears that you can still select things and order things, do research and such. Just the empire tree and everything in the main window pauses now. The empire tree still stops refreshing during the pauses.

have to noticed a vast improvement to the gameplay in late games stages due to 1.04

currently only tested on 1v1 and I only get slowdowns when I build lots of cruiser carriers (60) and even then it is minimal.

have not tried for anything higher, am currently working on a mod that the team wants done before Diplomacy so dont have much time beyond that

I also have had slowdowns in early games, but have been running some graphic mods and one mod dumps a lot of enemy ships into the well early game, so i figured it was that.

I'm running a mid level pc, 2gb memory and vista home. It has been a decent machine, running well, well... until recently that is, but it is half full now, so perhaps that and all the programs that i have added that want to start right off is doing it. Haha, i cant live without my music, so i went from cd's to itunes, but now an hour on the pc or so, everything starts slowing waaaaaaayyyyyyy down  :)  that and adobe popups!!  I used reader so seldom i am very inclined to delete it!  :)

Anyway, probably have to have it cleaned and re-done fresh to get everything back the way it was. I will have to save some of my stuff, but should be able to get some of the mods back by online. But probably so much other garbage its not funny. Anyone else having problems with itunes?
