Stardock vs. Strat first folders confusing GalCiv updater?

Am I correct in my surmise that those who purchase directly from stardock get their game installed in the stardock directory, and it is only we pukes who bought the game on CD that have a default install folder involving Strategy first?

I ask this because the SDC updater seems to put all the updated files in the Stardock folder.(Inside Dregin.net, even for those of us who have not yet subscribed to the omnibus package.)

Now if I run the nominally updated app from the software menu on SDC or using the .exe inside the local dregin.net folder, it runs fine ... albeit without multimedia, dunno whether bonuspak is available as I have not progressed far enough in a game to see excaliburs.

If I attempt to run the .exe in my strat first folder I get an immediate CTD or a delayed CTD (to the end of galaxy creation) if I put some of the missing files back in the setup/data folders.

This is a result of clean installs of SDC, 1.0GCiv (from the CD) and
1.0--->1.05.68 via SDC. This was true when updating to 1.04.62 as well.

I do not know whether the standalone updater has this behavior or not.

*IF* you select "Prompt for install dirctory" in your SDC options you may with reasonable vigilance be able to circumvent this problem...(I assume it would remanifest with each update) ...but I just thought sharing my experience with the methodically mad vicissitudes of the updater's confusion might save some other people frustration in getting back to gaming....

Rabe

I bought the game retail and have not had any trouble with the updater, it finds the install directory just fine on my side. The only thing I have in my StarDock folder is \SDCentral. All I can tell is what I did when I first setup everything. The first time I setup SDCentral I went to register GalCiv, under Tools -> Register Products..., the Drengin.net tab pops up, I set application as Galactic Civilizations, put my name, email, and serial# in the required fields, and that's about it.... Heh. I doubt any of that will help you. I am also curious why some people seem to be having trouble with the retail version and the SDC updater.

ah HA!!!

I went into my SDC tools/reg page and there is a section at the bottom that asks for the install paths of updates... in my case at least it says /stardock/dregin.net (even though all I have is GC and Smart Exception)

The only problem is there doesn't appear to be any way to change the given path as the browse button isn't working for me, nor is manually editing...

Thoughts?

Just to clarify: One *can* change the dregin.net path, but not the path associated with the GalCiv (dropdown) itself... whether this is a bug or merely counterintuitive is, perhaps, a question of taste...

I assume the former is effective in solving the problem, but have not explicitly verified it yet. I'm going to BED.

I have 3 different fropdowns for galciv, only one of which works, and the gae itself in 2 different folders, the one I wanted it into and Drengin.net.
The user interface of updates needs work, as it should prompt where the updates should go unless you have already manually overridden this.
That's something I can live with, though.
