I was horrified by the german language version, and I'm also a native german. I even had trouble understanding the german translations, aside from the annoying voices.

The thing that worked well for me was this:

- uninstall the german version completely but keep impulse

- use impulse to re-install the game from the internet and select english (actually, that way it was much faster to install than from DVD!)

...and then be happy about a game that finally can be understood. Who came to the idea to translate a structure status to "ausgelaufen" (spilled)? Or to change the names of ships into childish crap?

Aside from that, the original voices are so much better. You'll sigh in relief when you hear TEC units reporting!

Still attempting to wake up...but a few thoughts:

1) Could it be that you did not make a complete installation so that some sound files are used from the german only DVD?

2) Did you change anything after installing in german? Vista then typically creates a copy of the files in the users VirtualStore. If you later install anew, the originals may be updated, but the ones in VirtualStore kept and override the new installation.
