regional purity has had its time. Lucy was around then. 
As for America being diverse, I think it's largely because of the way people showed up. Some against their will, others by choice, some by force but not under subjugation. Some social issues are more recent in America than others and there is always the influence of the First Amendment. It's allowed some to retain their cultural identity and others to produce a new one of their own.
But I've known some Caribbean countries where race (at least in appearance) plays a factor in a very undercurrent way. Nothing nearly as conscious as here and maybe not at all a matter of race, rather a question of economic standing drawn from the past. Doesn't really matter much.
