Scuttling civic and military research facilities

I play the original, but patched version of sins vs the computer AI, usually on large maps with a lot of enemies which makes for long games.

I was wondering if after you've capped all your research can you delete the civic/military research stations to replace with trade ports/refineries to increase your income?  Or will scuttling the research facilities make you lose the technology?

Thanks.

You will lose some technology, such as ship and building types

other techs such as weapon/hull upgrades will be untouched

you must have 8 military labs to use/build your superweapons. You must have 5 military labs to build all your ship types... and you need a certain number of civic labs to build your tradeports/refinaries/broadcast centers... I dont know if you need 8 civic labs to use civic tier 8 techs (although, you need 8 to use deliverance engine i assume)

Techs that grant access to ships/structures will be lost if you don't have enough labs, otherwise it will continue to function.

In really long matches, I've seen Insurgency (that an AI researched) continue to work even after I blew up enough labs until the AI was declared defeated.

Scuttling labs is a very viable strategy.  You retain some technological capabilities, but lose others when you do so.  Generally you do this more in the early game rather than the late game, where logistics slots are worth a lot.  Almost always the labs scuttled will be civic in nature, since it's suicide to give up the ability to replace your higher tech units.

A ay you can save time without scuttling labs is to only research the techs you NEED, it saves crystal and credits too in the start. There are a couple techs that are worthless to certain types of players, so avoid those and keep the research facilities, and only build them as you expand, one of each type for each planet should put you at a good tech rate. That gives you enough room for factories, trade ports, refineries, and broadcast centers later on. I believe you keep bonuses, but lose construction and stationary functionallity capabilities if you lose the labs of each level, so sometimes back-up labs on interior worlds might be a good idea if an enemy offensive is coming through.

If you have culture centers or trade ports, losing your labs will prevent you from replacing them, but existing ones will remain operational.  The best reason to scuttle is to get your ice and/or volcanic colonization techs early on, then immediatley switch to a more military flavour.  This works particularly well with Vasari since you can also pick up the improved salvage technology, which virtually pays for itself just on those two scuttles alone.
