Sins Of A Solar Empire DRM

Sins Of A Solar Empire DRM

Hi everybody,

I'm interested in purchasing Sins Of A Solar Empire, either digitally or via CD. However, I've heard about the DRM this game carries. I personally despise DRM, primarily because it relies on a third party to allow you to use something you have already paid for. This is not the same as traditional game protection as with CD/DVD's, you owned a physical product and maintaining/making it work over the long term was largely your responsibility. With DRM, you have to trust that the original company system is working correctly over the long-term and that they remain in business. The history of software companies shows that neither can be relied on in general.

So I'm interested in how the Goo system works for Stardock. I read that it requires activation only once. This would be fine, apart from the fact that if you ever have to reinstall it, you are back to square one. Can I assume there is no way to re-install the game without reactivating after the initial time?

I've heard that the CD version comes without the Goo system. However, it seems possible that when you patch it with official updates, the Goo system is then required. Is this true?

Thanks

Well, the boxed version only has an advantage if you want to play up to 1.05.

In fact, boxed version can have some advantage... specially for people who have buy the collector edition ( some graphic art, poster, manual, audio CD, etc ... )... but since they have no more of these collector edition !!!

In regards to the using of Hamachi, i use it to play with friends because i end up getting a MUCH less lag-infested game that way because i don't end up having to go through the ICO servers. Yes, i originally had to use it to play with friends that pirated the game (though i gave them a serious piece of my mind about pirating this amazing game) but now i just use it to increase performance.

Just because it is used by scum does not make the program itself scum.

Turn off alloy and you'll get the same performance as hamachi.  Alloy is used to address router configuration and host disconnect issues, but if you want pure performance turn it off.

I'm pretty certain the license allows you to install Sins on more than one computer for LAN games.  I'm pretty certain you can do that but don't know much about the details.

From the E.U.L.A.:

YOU MAY:
...
2. Install a second copy of the SOFTWARE on a second computer only if you are the main user of this computer (home computer or laptop for example).
...
4. Use the SOFTWARE via a network, only if you have purchased an adequate number of licenses. The number of users must not exceed the number of licenses you have purchased.

translation:  if you have two computers on your personal lan that you are the primary use of, you may install on both.  you shouldnt install on computers that do not belong to you.  and if you happen to install on a friends pc, then you will definately want to make sure it is uninstalled when before you leave.

regardless, there are tons of posts in this forum where people have asked this question.  even ironclad team members have stated that lan games using one copy is fine as long as its your lan and your computers.
