Question about research bases.

Most of my games are comp stomping endevors with some friends of mine, and we often end up turtling for the first little bit while we build up.  As a result, real estate becomes quite the premium comodity.

My question deals with scrapping research stations.  If I were to build a bunch of military bases, do some military research, then scrap the bases to make room for civillian ones, do I still get to keep using the research (and any ship designs unlocked) even though I no longer have the minimum number of military bases?  I'm guessing that if so or if not, it would be the same if I built civilian first and then military, right?

you keep some, but not others, ex you keep the hitpoint, damage research, but lose the right to build heavy cruisers

try playing with a bigger map to give you room

ps remember you only need 8 of each

If that's the case then I'll keep doing what I've been doing, or at least keep enough military bases around to keep starbase production flowing (I prefer to play TEC and have gotten good at having very compact but insanely productive economies thanks to starbases with trade bays combined with trade ports).

You lose the ability to produce units and use special abilities you've researched if you scuttle military labs, so in general you never scuttle military labs.  However, you get to keep most civic techs, the only things you lose are the ability to produce structures that you no longer have the technology for.  As a result, it's very common to do the opposite, scuttling civic labs to make room for more military ones (if you don't have room for labs, you definitely don't have enough room for trade or refineries anyways)

In general this is something you do only early game.  Research volcanic and/or ice colonization technologies and whatever else you want, then scuttle the labs and replace them with military.  After doing this its entirely feasible to ignore the civic tech tree for the first hour of the game.  Once it hits late game and you start to build up, however, you should never scuttle your labs; this is something you do early game when you simply don't have enough logistics slots to get by.

I usually just build one of each on the first 8 planets I take.

But I also play on the DS mod so sometimes those planets have more slots of them

in that case I build 2
