frigates, shield mitigation

im startin to get a good feel for the game. but there are a few things about frigates/counters that im having trouble with..

from what i understand, LRF>LF; LF>anti-strikecraft, carriers; anti-strikecraft>fighters+bombers; fighters>?, bombers>structures, capships; heavy cruisers>are heavy cruisers even worth what it takes to get them?; siege frigates>planets

?>LRF; ?>Heavy cruiser;

could someone help me out with the fighters, heavy cruisers, and if im missing a counter, could you correct me?

also, could someone explain shield mitigation?

thanks

Fighters counter fighters,lrf,and bombers.

HC counter lrf and everything but structures. They are hard to get in numbers in time.By the time you can get 10 there is usually 30 or more lrf.

Shield miti negates a percentage of all damage that is being done to the ship.It goes up for a certian amount of damage and then goes back down.It suppose to help with ff but it doesnt.Basically fire from 2 ships will raise miti and from 1 wont.So 1 ship will do 85% of its damage but 2 will do less.Fire from 2 ships will raise it to 57% so both ships will only be doing 43% of thier listed damage. You also have damage modifiers to.

Oh ya bombers counter hc.

End of quote

Shield mitigation is the game's way of reducing incoming damage when a unit is being focus-fired on so it doesn't die as quickly.

It is essentially a direct damage reduction. Shield mitigation is only present on units that have shields (even if the shield hp is currently at 0, damage is still mitigated).

Mitigation starts at 15% base, which means right off the bat the ship takes 85% of the damage fired at it. Each point of damage taken increases the ship mitigation value by a small amount, and at the same time each second that passes decreases the current mitigation by a larger amount. Basically, the ship has to continuously be taking a fair amount of damage for its mitigation to increase. When it's not taking damage, the shield mitigation drops but never goes below the base. The maximum mitigation varies, but is usually 60% and up (Advent get more through their culture research and shield research).

It's a very powerful game mechanic, especially once starbases come into play that have 10k+ shields and 15k+ hull hp. For example, going from 60% mitigation to 70% (Advent culture/shield research) is a 25% damage reduction: at 60% the unit takes 40 damage out of 100, at 70% it takes 30 out of 100.

Hope this clarifies it a bit. :P

Shield mitigation can, in practice, be thought of as a flat 60% damage reduction.  This is because it quickly maxes out in any real battle.  Anything that bypasses shields also ignores shield mitigation.  Shield mitigation also applies to hull damage.

Now, as for unit types:

  • Scouts:  countered by fighters, flaks, light frigates, heavies, capital ships, even other scouts...
  • Light Frigates:  countered by LRF; capital ships and heavies are a soft counter
  • Long Range Frigates:  countered by scouts, fighters, and heavies
  • Flaks:  countered by light frigates; heavies are a soft counter
  • Siege Frigates:  countered by scouts and fighters, but virtually anything will kill them quickly
  • Carriers:  countered by light frigates; any high damage dealer is a soft counter
  • Support Cruisers:  countered by light frigates
  • Heavy Cruisers:  countered by bombers, some support cruisers
  • Capital Ships:  countered by long range frigates, heavies, bombers

  • Darvin3, how do you counter HC with hoshikos, overseers or whatever support cruiser is out there?

And as for LRM against Caps: works fine with Vasari and Advent, not so much with TEC-LRM. As long there is no anti-strikecraft cap on the battlefield bombers will also do very nicely!

The hardest counter to heavies is the guardian with repulse.  It literally pushes them out of attack range.  You then have subverters and subjugators, which can completely disable heavies.  Not totally reliable (subjugators are particularly notorious for not getting the job done), but when you compare cost points these support cruisers definitely have the upper hand.  Hoshiko demo bots and Cielo targeting are particularly effective against the large heavy cruisers, and can even the odds for lower-tech units like light frigates to actually go toe-to-toe with heavies.  Overseers are really more for your capital ships and won't help much outside of this capacity.

I thought I listed bombers as a counter to caps... must have been an oversight, I've edited my post.  And yes, the TEC LRM does rip capital ships to shreds in sufficient numbers.  It's not quite as deadly as the Vasari or Advent varieties, but it still functions as a counter.
