Editing Entity files

Listen all I want to do is edit ship stats like how much health and damage they do. But I look through all the things you guys hand out and I can't seem to edit them, I converted them into notepad and they still look like this,

BIN
   R e s o u r c e A s t e r o i d    M e t a l    H U D I C O N _ R E S O U R C E A S T E R O I D M E T A L "   H U D I C O N S M A L L _ R E S O U R C E A S T E R O I D M E T A L "   I N F O C A R D I C O N _ R E S O U R C E A S T E R O I D M E T A L "   M A I N V I E W I C O N _ R E S O U R C E A S T E R O I D M E T A L    P I C T U R E _ R E S O U R C E A S T E R O I D M E T A L       R e s o u r c e A s t e r o i d _ M e t a l    I D S _ R E S O U R C E A S T E R O I D M E T A L _ N A M E    I D S _ R E S O U R C E A S T E R O I D M E T A L _ D E S C           €?

How do I get that into something editable?

Yeah, by default the game files are in Binary format to save space. There are a veriety of GUI programs that can do this for you (like Harpo's), or there is a convert data batch file if don't mind using command prompt. Also you can find the already converted files for download at some third party websites.

Ah but I've been trying to use that but it shuts down right away.

^Then I'd recommend you use one of the other two alternatives.

mr chance, my textbin gui will NOT alter the files in your program files tree so as to NOT damage your game's installation files, so you need to copy the folders to another path eg c:\sins\reference\sins 1.181 c:\sins\reference\entrenchment 1.041 c:\sins\reference\diplomacy 0.95, the reason for the version numbers in the folder name is so that the correct convertdata is used for converting the files between text & bin as I had found that files converted with an older convertdata had difficulties converting with a later one.

hope this info helps
