Is this what your seeing? The save grey out?
If thats the case you gotta set a name first before the save button ungreys out.
As for the autosave saves about every 15 mins. I can be changed in the setting file, but if you save yourself often its not a big deal. And note that the autosaves are in a different list from user saved files.
