Advent: Hangar defense additional squadron research

Anyone notice that for the Advent, their hangar starts with 3 available squadrons, then when you research 1 and 2 additional squadrons for the hangar, you still can only a max of 3 squadrons?

thats because you don't get extra squads, you get an extra strikecraft

ex you have 2 squads of 5 bombers, you research this tech, you now have 2 squads of 6 bombers, and so on

Is it actually worth it to research that?  Maybe if you were defending an important planet and had 5+ hangers (15 squads total).  Researching the 2nd level would give you 30 more strikecraft, which seems significant.

Not really worth it, in my opinion.  If it also affected starbases, maybe, but hangers?  No.

The problem with this is it doesn't make hangers replace strike craft any faster, or decrease the antimatter cost of rebuilding them, so hangers still run into their issue of simply becoming depleted in both short-term and long-term conflicts anyways.

Hangers in general are too costly and inflexible in the current version of the game.  Carriers cost only marginally more and perform much better, plus they're mobile.  Once you consider the tactical space costs, the choice is a no-brainer.  Unless you want their special abilities (flak turrets, phasic traps, or shield bestowal) hangers are just not worth it IMO.

In entrenchment, I believe the upgrades to the hangars, ie flak turrets, shield bestowal, phasic trap, make them worthwhile in certain situations in MP and in more situations in SP. I witnessed one of the DT guys defend himself with a Starbase, 1 Halcyon, 3 repair bays and  a couple of hangars against 2 very skilled players who spammed bombers once they saw the starbase. All the while, the DT guy was able to build an assault fleet at planets he had take towards the center of the map. Personally I've witnessed a fleet supported by hangars and starbase thwart my bomber attacks for a long, long time with a combination of fighter suppression and flak turrets on the hangars, despite being vastly outnumbered. They are powerful defensive tools, and I no longer take them as lightly as I used to. Yes they are not as versatile as carriers, but they have more health and better armor, and they dont take up fleet supply (where as carriers take up quite a bit), which can be important when you're on the defensive. I'd say hangars are definitely useful in SP, and situationally useful in MP (particularly in the suicide spot).

I agree that carriers are better than hangers, but hangers don't consume fleet supply.  For example, the Advent can build 3 hangers to help protect a starbase from fighters and it costs zero fleet supply whereas 3 carriers would cost 60.  I think that it makes sense to build them (aside from the one Advent would want to build for the shielding ability) in certain situations and at certain locations.

Question: is Shield Bestowal worthwhile? I get it quite commonly in singleplayer, but of course haven't touched MP.

Shield Bestowal will more than double the toughness of orbital structures around the hanger.  Combined with repair bays, this is extremely worthwhile.  I often build Advent hangers for no other purpose other than shield bestowal.

It's also good for keeping starbases alive for that much longer. If you can actually get turrets, a group of those with the Synergy ability buffed by the Hangar take forever to kill.

Ok, good. Because I build Advent hangers solely for shield bestowal as well, so just wanted to make sure. >_>

Probably, I don't remember, it was a couple of weeks ago. I do remember that after the bomber spam 2v1 failed, the opposing team gave up and GG'd it.
