how to download install and patch files

install and patch files

I'm one of those people who like to save purchased software on my own discs, for when the company inevitably goes away.

For the original Sins of a Solar Empire, I own the box copy, but would like to download the latest patch file to save away.

For Entrenchment, I would like to download Entrenchment and the latest patch file to save away.

I can't find any patch download links on this website.

Currently, I've archived both games with Impule's archive feature. Does anyone know if upon restoring from the archives, will these games work without internet connection?

Off topic, but related, I would like to do the same for the patch file for Gal Civ 2 Ultimate Edition.

I am assuming you bought the trinity version cause if you didn't you would already know to get patches. So here it is.

You need to download Impulse from impulsedriven.com or something like that goolge it.

Install it.

Use the same account here with the same password and log in.

I dont' remmeber where but you need to enter your cd key somewhere on there.

when it confirms it, check for the updates in the corner.

It should say you got updates, download and wait for it to install

I already know how to update thru Impulse. What I'm looking for is a link to the actual patch file so that I can download it and save it away. When I'm retired to my tropical island with no internet connection, I want to be able to play the latest greatest version of Sins.

It used to be that PC games would have the patch file sitting on the game's website for any and all to download and save away. With impulse, the patch downloads and installs directly into the game so there's nothing for me to save.

There is no patch file. Impulse just does a comparison between your files and the server's files and downloads/replaced what needs changing. If you want to keep an offline archive, you can download the full up-to-date build from http://anywhere.impulsedriven.com and save it on a disc or flash drive. That way you can re-install from the archive without having to re-download, and will have the latest version right away. This archive will not require an internet connection to install, and will be the latest version, assuming no patch since you downloaded it ;)

Note that Impulse is also the form of DRM that Stardock is using for its games from now on.  We all hate DRM, of course, but I'd much rather have to put up with having to load and use Impulse once every couple months than have Securom or Starforce on my computer.

Mhmm, I'm taking this topic for my question, as it's related to Impulsedriven Anywhere and the topic's not too old ...

... I liked to download Sins of a Solar Empire: Diplomacy via Impulsedriven Anywhere, and it seems to complete the download without problems. But if I want to install, I get the error that the installation data is incomplete. I've downloaded the installer (which differs in its file-size from the description on the download-page) and the data file.

I downloaded them yesterday multiple times ... I redownloaded them today again.

I renamed the installer file for a "nicer" filename, but also I tried with the recommended filename. The data file never got renamed.

The download and installation of Sins of a Solar Empire and Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment did without problems, even with renamed Installer.

Is there possibly an error in the files on the server?

Sigh

I bought Sins Trinity today in australia. I've installed it from scratch... Played the game and wanted to test out the new features (Having played the original) on testing the missions and had the crash/minidump.

So I thought okay need to update. Had a pain of a time getting impulse to work (It didn't want to accept my serial) finally I cancelled and it logged in anyway. Apparently it had accepted my serial... Very odd. So I updated the game through impulse. Then verified my installation. It said it wasn't installed correctly and needed patching again.

Now I'm in australia and subject to bandwidth limits. So yeah I guess I was kinda hoping I would be able to save the patch as well for my trinity installation.

Yes I hate DRM. I hate the idea of a base installation of a game being prone to crashing using a "standard" feature thus being absolutely required to login to Impulse to get a working game. That's annoying.

I have pretty much the same problem as bgilliford...I'll go back to bashing away at Impulse.

It's one thing for companies to protect their product by DRM etc, but not at the expense of the end-user-product and satisfaction of the customer.  Consumers get walked over all the time, not so much because the initial product is poor, but because the means of protecting it is so restrictive or suckhole that it lessens the value of the product.

The companies will be screwed when gamers form political lobby-groups, and when their restrictive trade practices come under consumer advocacy laws they'll really hurt.
