[RESOLVED] Game won't run for me-- Sins itself did, Entrenchment did

Last month I upgraded Sins to Entrenchment and was enjoying it thoroughly. I was hesitant about downloading the latest microexpansion so soon after release but was eager, so...

It won't run. I get a dump before the Ironclad logo comes up. Event Viewer says it was EventId 1000 of type N/A, Faulting application sins of a solar empire diplomacy.exe, version 1.0.3.0, faulting module sins of a solar empire diplomacy.exe, version 1.0.3.0, fault address 0x00001a72.

Followed shortly by EventID 1001, type Error, Fault bucket 1698444092.

Is anyone else having similar issues? Does anyone have any ideas on possible workarounds?

Typically this is a bad install. Uninstall all Sins products, manually delete anything in the installation folder and reinstall via Impulse.

I can buy that as an explanation-- when I went to Add/Remove, only Entrenchment and Sins were there, not Diplomacy. Both errored when I tried to remove, asking if I just wanted to remove them from my programs list anyway.

Now the problem is that Impulse won't load- crashes each time, application restarts, repeat. Impulse is not listed on my Add/Remove programs, and when I download the installer from impulsenow it is telling me I need to upgrade to IE 7 for things to work right--- despite the fact that I already have IE 7.

Any ideas?

ETA- Thanks for the reply

Please contact [email protected] for assistance with this. If Impulse is also crashing, it's a pretty bad sign.

Actually, Blair's suggestion worked. It took a little bit of extra effort, but following along the idea he suggested of reinstalling, and since Impulse was saying I should upgrade to IE 7 (which was already installed) I did the following:

1) Re-downloaded the IE7 installer and re-ran it.

2) Re-ran the Impulse installer. Now it did not complain that I did not have IE 7. [ETA- and instead of giving that complaint, gave me the option to uninstall or repair the install of Impulse. I chose the repair option]

3) Deleted everything in the Starkdock Games folder

4) Reinstalled Sins

5) Reinstalled Entrenchment

6) Reinstalled Diplomacy

Voila. Happy happy.

Thanks for the comments.

If your IE7 install got pooched, check yourself for malware.

Very good suggestion there, IE installs are pretty bulletproof short of something that isn't supposed to be present.

No spyware, no trojans according to Symmantec, Spybot, and Anti-malware. Not sure what happened. But to clarify, IE7 did not appear to me to be malfunctioning-- I could browse in it just fine, even though it is not my browser of normal use. However, when I would run the Impulse installer, it would tell me that I needed to upgrade to IE7.

Who knows? It's fixed, and my system appears to be fine.
