Locked teams?

What is the effect...

Sometimes trying to build relationships with AIs can get a bit tedious. "Here, send your fleet across the galaxy to destroy this other AIs fleet for me and i'll like you", *sends fleet*, *AI that gave you mission jumps into one of your planets and starts raping your a$$....*

But yeah... i spent ages trying to buddy up with an AI just to fail.

So what would be the effect of locking the teams? Would that pretty much disable the whole expansion or would you still be able to improve your relationship via envoys and obtain pacts with the allies that you started the game with? If you start allied to a player do you get a relationship bonus, or does it just remain as 0 (although we're allies i still hate you XD)?

A scenario in particular I was looking forward to trying was the typical me and 2 AIs vs the vicious AI, but if teams are unlocked I end up losing my allies as they both want me to kill the other to gain their allegiance. But if i lock teams and i can't gain relations with them and achieve pacts to help in fighting the vicious bloke... then what is the point in the whole expansion in the first place?

the point is to HARASS ur enemy like hey dude would u like to choose u bombard that planet of my enemy or i just send a christmas present to ur homeworld using NOVALITH EXPRESS™?

but seriously even in locked teams AIs got some opinion meter on ur faction regarding ur actions. what u never get any whisper from AIs like i wouldn't lose any caps if u weren't so useless?

Locked Teams used to be essential because otherwise the AI would end up ganging up on the one human player, eventually.  If you were playing a 10-AI free for all game and you had the teams unlocked, you would end up facing 7 or 8 allied AI players against you later in the game.  This happened to me shortly after I purchased the game and my large fleet and the large allied AI fleets ended up in a stalemate at a chokepoint, and I thought to myself, "WTF?  Why aren't any of the AIs fighting each other?"  However, having locked teams on probably disables some of the Diplomacy features.  Locked Teams is the standard setting for online humans v. humans games and probably for comp stomps as well.  I'm under the impression that one of the purposes of the Diplomacy expansion was to bring dipomacy back to those 10-man single player AI games so that people could play them with unlocked teams.

I find it amazing that No one in the know, devs, publisher is able to give a straight answer to how Diplomacy deals with locked teams. If someone has stated the difference, I havent seen it.

I always played locked teams, didnt mined the ai teaming up against me...it was a challenge. In a 1x1 game does Diplomacy even make sense? Diplomatic victory? No thanks...why am I building ships? To visit?
