Help with minor mods using forge tools

I was able to use reference data from the old forge tools to change the ship level and some other minor things by pasting the entity files directly into the game folder but when I try to use the mods by putting it in the mod folder as soon as I activate it the game freezes. How can I get the mods to work by using the mod folder? Any help would be appreciated.

You need the .entity files from the version that your running. It crashes if you don't.

Yeah, you need to get up to date entity files by using one of the converter tools on a copy of the games entity files. I recommend Harpo's GUI tool.

The Forge Tool data is old and outdated.

Harpo has a GUI that allows you to convert your game data from BIN to TXT. Also he has made a set of TXT Reference files somewhere. Im sure if you are lazy he will show up and link it. He is very good about that.
