Any tips for the lag?

So yeah... I enjoy playing long games on high difficulty level, and the AI always makes some ridiculously big fleet, that after a while the game slows down alot.   Is there any way to fix this? I actually have a good gaming computer, and even while changing the graphics to low, it didn't seem to change much.

Thanks!

Have you patched to the most recent version?  A substantial number of the people having lag issues never bothered to patch...

Did you ensure most other programs are closed before you run SINS?

Ctrl Alt Del

processes

CPU usage and mem usage

(close include firefox and/or inet explorer)

I do beleive I play the latest diplomacy version, and the only program I have running is usually MSN, wich I doubt would change anything if I closed it.

Then the best I can suggest is playing with fleet sizes set to "small".  This is kind of a misnomer, since fleets can still get pretty big, just not quite as big.

Even with high end pc's turning trade ship icons off helps.

Consider running with normal or slow settings too instead of Fast or Faster for large games.

Do you have a dual-core processor?  Open the Task Manager and set all of the programs to run on Core #0 only.  (You can only set non-system processes to that.)  Then set Sins to run on Core #1 and set it to High Priority.

Yeah, just played with small fleet size, it did help quite a bit.

Will also try slow settings and the processor trick, thanks for the help.

Why would running the game on only one core help. Isnt it better to have it use both cores?

I noticed no one mentioned trimming the empire tree. This can be mainly done before game start to not automatically pin planets, ships, fleets, etc. You can also pin/unpin in game to help trim the tree down. Many people have reported this helps with lag as well.

I keep capital ships pinned and pretty much unpin everything else.

Notice there is a no way to turn off auto pin of Star bases. You will have to manually unpin those if desired.

End of GJDriessen's quote

It's really a single-threaded game.  I think it has another thread for loading textures, but that doesn't help matters all that much.  It's better to give the game its own dedicated core.

Sins Optimization Project :waaaa:

The problem with lag is the hardcoded limits in ram usage.  The Optimization project will help solve this issue by minimizing the ram load of the game.  Check it out!
