GPG to use Steam for Kings and Castles

After Supreme Commander 2, I didn't have high hopes for Kings and Castles, but whatever hopes I did have just go crushed. In the most recent video blog (linked above, but here it is again http://gaspowered.com/kingsandcastles/video-blog-15/), Cris Taylor said K&C will be using Steam for their DRM.

While he never explicitly said whether it will be using Steamworks, or just be distributed on Steam, I think it can probably be safely assumed based off of SC2 that K&C will be using Steamworks. I guess that's another $50 I won't be spending...

Ugghhh.  I hate steam because it always has to be open with the game.  Why do companies use them?  Wish SD would get their shit together with impulse and make it more competitive in the few features it lags in so devs could use it and we could have some real competition.  I don't care who wins I just don't want the monopoly we are now seeing.  First Civ V and now Kings and catles, ugghhhh.

The Impulse::reactor is a direct concurrent of Steamworks. Sadly, it isn't yet available (general availability in summer 2010).

That's my point.  It is not out!!!  Also there is limited/poor achievement (who really cares), friends, chat, and voip functionality.  If impulse want to compete these need to be improves.  Then it need to get some publishers to sign up.

Ugggggg.  Another game on my do not buy list.  I do have to wonder if GPG has a bad taste in their mouth from the Demigod issues and thus went with Steam.  Sad.

I do agree that Stardock does need to fast track Impulse reactor and GOO because more and more games fall to the Steam empire the longer we wait for it.

yeah but you gotta ask yourself this, maybe the features that publishers and developers like about steam are the same features we hate about steam.  so maybe its not such a good idea they follow steams route to just become more competitive.

I have far less problems with Steamworks than with that unbelievable pile of shit called Games for Windows Live, so it's ok for me.

Sorry for Stardock, by the way. maybe they must try to push Impulse Recator more strongly, almost fiercely.

OR they can try to look for a collaboration with Valve, finding a way which allows them to offer Steamwork-based titles.

The fact that Steam have 70+% of DD market also help spread Steamworks.

Brad will never sell a Steamworks title on Impulse nor allow Valve to sell a Stardock-published title on Steam simply because he does not want to contribute to Steam's impending DD monopoly and possible monopoly on all PC titles.

I do agree that Stardock does need to fast track Impulse reactor and GOO because more and more games fall to the Steam empire the longer we wait for it.

I think once Elemental comes out other developers might start using Impulse::Reactor. Right now it is an untested system, but once Elemental comes out, assuming it is the success I think it will be, developers will see that Impulse Reactor is a viable alternative to Steamworks.

Is it just me or are these blogs more annoying than entertaining? 

As for K&C, it may make for a good replacement for the threadbare Medieval: Total War, but I think I'm going to much prefer Elemental.  I've always been only lukewarm on GPG.  I never cared much for the original SC (there's something off about that game), and the sequel was just a console port. Demigod seemed alright, but it was not my cup of tea.   All in all, not much of a record for me to get excited about.  

I hope this game does succeed - we can never have too many medieval games  - but I'm not counting the days as I am with Elemental.

Actually, there is quite. And the endless comparisons to real. physical products are getting really old.

Instead, think of it as a service, even if you get the game on a DVD. Or perhaps even better, compare it to visiting a theatre, a music concert, or an exhibition. You pay for the experience, not the physical object(s) on display per se. And pirating a game is akin to getting in there without paying for a ticket.

No problem for me for Steam use. It must be because of the Square Enix (I don't know they publish the game anyway but they are using Steam for DRM).
