Model Help

Hey peoples!

I recently downloaded a model of the Normandy SR2 from mass effect from Scifi-meshes.com and have been fiddling around with modeling trying to get it in game. i havent even been able to open it up in xsi in order to attempt to asign mesh points. I take no credit for the model, all credit goes to: Thorreign (aka: matt/mathias)

Since i have no experience in modeling i'm really in the dark with what to do here. I've looked around at tutorials and such, but i still cant figure it out. 

So i decided to see if there was anyone who would be willing to help me out getting this ship in sins as i am making no progress. The ship would be used for my personal mod nothing more without permission. if anyone wants to help i'll put the link up. Any help would be appreciated

what format is the mesh?  If it isn't in a standard format, you may need someone with another modeling program to get it remade.

I could do that with 3D Studio Max if you want...

Here are the 3 Mod Tools required to import models.

XSI Mod Tool Download
A free 3D modeling and animation package for creating non-commercial games and "modding" (modifying games). Used by game developers (including Ironclad) to create 3D models, levels, props, and animation. Thread
Blender Download
Free Open Source 3D modeling and animation package.
3D Object Converter Download
Shareware (but will work FOREVER , most file formats are un-exportable/importable).

A powerful 3d model translation and interactive viewing shareware tool that allows arbitrary 3d model data to be imported from external sources, exported to various industry standard 3d file formats with great accuracy and quality.

 

Step 1

Animated Space - Astronauts
Open 3D Object Converter.

Using the "Batch Convert..." is the easiest way to import/export one or all the meshes.

The Forge Tools Documents uses the “FrigatePsiLight” for there example.

 
Import the BINARY (.BIN) mesh file/s into 3DOC.

Choose "browse" to select the export directory.

Note: Do Not use export "to same dir." This will write the .slp files to the SoaSE root directory causing Check Sum Errors.

Export as...

"Pro/Engineer render" (*.slp)

 

 

Step 2

Free Animations
Import the "Pro/Engineer render" (*.slp) file into Blender.

There is no "Batch Convert" included with Blender. All files will need to be converted individually.
From Blender, one can also turn the .slp into a .obj (used for this tutorial) or .xsi for use in XSI.

 

Default Blender Save Location
"C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\"

 

Step 3

animated gifs
Open XSI and select:

File --> Import --> Obj File...

Navigate to where the saved .obj file from Blender is located.
In the "Wavefront OBJ Import" window, select browse [...].

 

Default Blender Save Location
"C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\.blender\"
 

Navigate to where the Blender OBJ file was saved.

There is a Favourites Button to add your Imports Folders
Congratulations!

The model should now be viewable in XSI.

Hey SivCorp, thanks for the offer! and to answer your question It has multiple formats included: 3DS, MAX, and OBJ.

and by the way, the model is a bit of a heavyweight... (understatement) if you could take out any unneeded details thatd be much appreciated. I also have much less detailed model, but i have to download a separate program to convert it, plus it would definitely need a re-texture. if this model proves to be too much i'll go ahead and attempt to convert the other one.

 

Thanks to both of you for your help, hopefully i'll be able to catch on to this modeling stuff and start doing things myself
