changing planets in game via special abilities

Does anyone know if there is anyway to change the type of a planet in game?  This would be the result of a unit/ faction special ability acting on the chosen planet.  The best example I can think of would be like the Death Star in Star Wars.  Could you shoot a planet with it and have the planet turn into an asteroid field/ belt?

i do know this was discussed before, and TECHNICALLY you cant change the type, but you can get veery close by applying new images with the ability, and to have the ability cause specific buffs/debuffs that are permanent (or millions of minutes long, which in all practicality is permanent)

like riviaguy said, you could give the planet an effect in which you use the mesh of a different typeof planet that is only like .01% larger then the original plane, but that would only work for planet changes such as terrain-volcanic or volcanic-terrain

If you were using particle effects... You could create an alpha mesh that blanks out the previous mesh.

Unfortunately, it creates peculiar abnormalities, and it would look quite odd as it would cancel ALL meshes near the effect, not to mention the lag that might be created.

plus the fact that you cannot attach cloudlayers, darksidelights,or planet elevators
