From http://soase.weebly.com/placing-mods.html

Sins Mods are very specific to version and expansion type. There are 3 different games in Trinity, each with there own folder for different updates.

  • Sins of a Solar Empire --> ...\Mods-vX.XX
  • Sins of a Solar Empire Entrenchment --> ...\Mods-Entrenchment vX.XX
  • Sins of a Solar Empire Diplomacy --> ...\Mods-Diplomacy vX.XX

vX.XX is the version of the selected expansion. There maybe multiple folders for different versions of each upgrade. Place the mod in the most current version folder only if the mod was made for that version of that expansion. Older version folders or the mods in them are no longer used by the game.

If you have upgraded the game and can no longer use your favourite mod you can try harpo's Mod Updater. This will not always work and you can check and post in the appropriate mod thread for it to be upgraded to the latest version.

There is not to many modders supporting vanilla sins anymore. Most of the action is in Diplomacy which requires Entrenchment. A lot of Vanilla Sins mods are out of date.

The problem is probably that besides Distant Stars most of those mods are kind of old and probably haven't been updated. Try looking in the mods forum here for ones still in development, and besides Distant Stars some good Vanilla mods are Maelstrom (gameplay) and Bailknight's Graphics Mod (Graphics only; I can't find a Vanilla link, but delete the GameInfo folder on it should make it work with Vanilla). As for Distant Stars they quit adding new versions for Vanilla but they might have one that works for 1.191.

The expansions add a lot more mod support so many mods are Entrenchment/Diplomacy only, so if you end up getting the expansions your choices will increase dramatically. :D

There are lots for entrenchment. All mods made for Ent 1.05 will work for 1.051 and its been a long time since the last patch before that.

Distant Stars currently has the vanilla version on hold (PM Stant123 if you really really want an updated copy of it) so we all highly recommend buying the expansion. At $10 a piece they are worth it.
