I need motivation.

I got some money and i want to spend it on a game. Like the title say's, i need motivation to buy this. Good thing is that i can buy this cheaper than usual in this weekend and i like space related stuff.

What i am concerned about is online gaming. Can someone describe what's it like? How many games a day, week? Is it like Europa Universalis 3, where players meet and make up a time when to play. Is there a friendly crowd? Being able to play this online is a good thing towards me getting this.

Edit: I heard something about "Rebellion". Is it another expansion and/if it does come out.

at the same time, this game is the best RTS i've ever played.  Its a great blend of turn based strategy (not quite as in depth as your turn based titles, similar to total war series level of depth) and RTS.  This game is worth every penny!  I keep buying it for my friends.

The online community is small, and you might have to wait a while for a game.  also the learning curve can be a long one depending upon your natural skill level, so expect to lose a few games at the start.  if you have perserverence you can enjoy meaningful long term games at a scale that i've never seen in any other RTS game.

I personally welcome new players to the ranks, others can be unfair and boot newbies.  I would suggest playing a few games with a friend and get the hang of playing with or against a few human players before jumping straight into an intense 5v5 match.  If you don't have any friends with the game, just ask someone on the server chat and make some :).

Smurfing is when a(n) experienced/veteran player creates a new profile that has little to no wins (or stats whatsoever, actually) then proceeds to play online MP games. The idea is that the purported inexperience is then used to totally crush the opposition, who is usually of an experience that is similar to or slightly greater than the falsified profile of the "smurf".

I presume that "team stacking" is when either:

1) multiple experienced players team up against a group of new players; OR
2) several smurfs join a couple of experienced players against an equal number of legitimate pros and legitimate newbies, proceeding to a curbstomp.

A simpler version of 1 is that the more experienced players gang up on the less experienced players.

You might want to consider waiting for the stand-alone Rebellion expansion which will cost $40 but will contain all of the content from the previous games.  However, if you purchase the Trinity collection now it will save you $10 on the Rebellion download.  So, it depends on the price of Trinity and how much you want to play the game.  (If you have a huge amount of free time over the Summer then maybe it would make sense to get Trinity now.)

This game is about 3.5 years old now and the online multiplayer (Ironclad Online) player counts aren't real high.  However, there are normally a couple 4v4 and 5v5 games everyday on the Diplomacy expansion.  (Regular Sins and Entrenchment are pretty dead.)  It's a little more active on the weekends. The peak of activity is generally from around 3 pm to 11 pm U.S. Eastern Time.  During that time player counts on the Diplomacy server can range from 25 people up to 50.  However, half or more than half of those people are just playing against the computer with their friends.  Most likely, there's one 5v5 and a 2v2 or 3v3 being played at any one time.  As things stand now, you will have to wait to get into games.  Hopefully hundreds of new people will come online to play PvP when the Rebellion game (which might be like a Sins 2) is released.

What the other players have said about a learning curve is correct.  It's hard to break into this game now because most or almost all of the people in the 5v5 games are experienced pros.  There are still some newer and lesser-skilled players around, though.  If you get the game you'll probably want to spend your first month playing against the AI until you have a solid grasp of all the mechanics, the races, their strengths and weaknesses, and the tech trees.  You will get thumped when you start to play other people because human opponents are very different from algorithym-driven AI, so you have to learn how to play against other people.  You have to acquire experience to be able to predict what other people will do, how they will react to things, and very importantly, to be able to assess the strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities of opposing fleets and defenses.

However, it's an awesome game once you get up to speed.  Some new guys pick it up faster than others.  If you are diligent and serious about getting up-to-speed, it's possible to be able to hold your own with the pros in about two months (one month playing against single player, one month playing against pro players).  Also, you can read the Strategy forums and watch replays of games, which allows you to study and break-down every move the pro players make.  (So even though you might get thumped in your first 50 games against other people, they can server as treasure troves of information.)

Well if you are having any type of doubts about the game you are getting, you can always try the demo. Its quite out of date now and only has the tutorial and a medium random map with one available faction, it should give you an idea of just how awesome the engine is and how it works.

Also I'll to persuade you with a video with a graphics mod showing all the space battle goodness.

Edit: It looks better in the actual Youtube player though.

I know this game well enough. I can hold my own against AI yes, but playing ICO is a different story. Right now greatest problem i see is the lag issue described before.

It's not that big of a deal unless, for whatever reason, you personally prove to be the source of the lag (weak computer, bad Internet connection).

What difficulty level for the AI?  If you can't beat unfair easily hands down in a 1v1 (pirates off) then you are going to be on the bottom of the ladder on ICO...I'm not saying this to be mean or discouraging, but if it really matters to you that you are considered "good" while playing on ICO, you need to be able to fight unfair AIs with no problems...

The experience you get on ICO will be highly dependent on how good you are...if you are damn good, then you will quickly earn the respect of others (and probably be called a smurf)...if you suck, some people won't mind, and some people will be real asses to you...there are casual players out there but don't bank on finding a particular type of game other than moderate to skilled 4v4s and 5v5s...

I prefer LAN games with friends as 1) I know, like, and trust the people I play and 2 ) we use a mod...

Obviously the LAN option isn't always feasible for everyone, but if you can get some people you know personally to play with you, odds are you will enjoy the game significantly more...

In general, I wouldn't have high hopes for ICO...it can be a lot of fun, but there's no guarantee you'll have a good or even okay experience...

Is your game fully patched to the most current version?  If you really can't figure it out then keep posting and maybe email [email protected]
