Playable Pirates?

I'm just curious if there is a way to make Pirates playable.

I tried setting 'isSelectable' to 'TRUE' in 'PlayerPirate.entity' but ended up with no builders and got a minidump for some reason. (Yeah, I know by doing such that they wont really have a research tree or things like Starbases, but I was just screwing around with it for now.)

So is there an extra bit i missed, or will i have to make them their own race?

(Which I was trying to avoid doing. ^-^; )

There was actually a mod that did that, so it is possible. I think they just made a new faction with the pirate units though, since the game needs the current one to set up pirate raids/bases and the like. So I'm afraid there is no shortcut lol.
